Esther Simplot Park
About Esther Simplot Park
Park Overview
Found in the heart of Boise, Idaho lies the 55-acre Esther Simplot Park, which opened its gates in 2016. It's the newest site in Boise's "Ribbon of Jewels," a collection of riverside parks named after notable women who've left their mark on the community.
About 23 acres of the park are dedicated to ponds where you can fish, wade, swim, paddleboard, or kayak. When summer temperatures climb, these water features provide a refreshing spot for locals and visitors alike.
History and Development
The park came to life thanks to a generous $1 million gift from J.R. and Esther Simplot back in 2003. Their contribution enabled the Boise Parks and Recreation Department to purchase the remaining riverfront property needed to complete the park.
The city already owned 39 acres, partially donated by the Quinn-McEntee family. The Simplots' contribution helped secure the final 16.5 acres at what used to be the Consolidated Concrete Co. What once hummed with industrial activity is now a peaceful public space offering both recreation and a natural retreat in the city.
Features and Amenities
Winding through Esther Simplot Park is about a mile of walking and biking paths. The design incorporates natural elements - wetlands flow into grassy open spaces, blending recreation areas with wildlife habitat.
The interconnected ponds form a paddling circuit that extends to nearby Quinn's Pond, offering over 50 acres of calm water to explore. If swimming is more your style, you'll come across designated areas complete with beaches and even a dock platform with a ladder for easy access.
Kids will love the multiple playgrounds scattered within the park, some near the water and others in separate areas. Restrooms are available and typically open from spring through fall.
Recreational Activities
Water recreation is a highlight here. The calm waters make paddleboarding particularly appealing, especially for beginners just finding their balance. Multiple entry points around the ponds help prevent overcrowding, even when the park is buzzing with activity.
Fishing spots are available if you're hoping to cast a line, however you might want to arrive early during peak times. For those who prefer to stay dry, the extensive trail network connects to the Boise Greenbelt, opening up miles of pathways for walks, runs, or bike rides.
Picnic and Gathering Areas
You can find no shortage of picnic spots across the park. A pavilion with tables and benches accommodates larger gatherings, while the grassy areas near the water make perfect spots to spread out a blanket and enjoy lunch with a view.
The open layout provides ample space whether you're planning a family reunion or seeking a quiet spot to read a book, making it versatile for both social events and peaceful solitude.
Environmental Benefits
Beyond recreation, the park serves some practical purposes too. It helps reduce flood risk and manages stormwater in the surrounding area - beauty with a purpose.
Its location next to the Boise River and proximity to other outdoor spaces like Veterans Memorial Park and the Boise Whitewater Park creates an impressive network of connected recreation areas. The thoughtful design includes dedicated wildlife habitat areas, making it a rewarding spot for casual nature watching.
Visitor Information
The park welcomes visitors daily from 7AM to 10PM during the year. Note that pets aren't allowed in the park (except for service animals) to maintain a clean environment for water activities and wildlife. You can, however, bring your furry friends on the Greenbelt paths that run through the area.
During summer months, especially weekends, the park can get quite busy around the water features. Be aware that the park is home to many waterfowl, which occasionally affects the cleanliness of some areas.
Funded by the Simplot Foundation, this park combines recreational opportunities with natural beauty in an urban setting.
