DeMeyer Park
About DeMeyer Park
History & Origin
Nestled in West Boise, DeMeyer Park spreads across 12.84 acres of green space. Back in 1977, Albert and Hazel DeMeyer donated this land to the city.
The park hasn't completely shed its ranch roots. You can still spot the original ranch home, barns, and a distinctive concrete silo standing tall as a reminder of the area's farming days. There's also a charming pond that dates back to the property's agricultural past.
Park Features
The pond is home to local wildlife including ducks and geese paddling around, and if you're lucky, you might even catch sight of a bullfrog or two.
Thankfully, the park offers a nice balance of sunny spots and shaded areas thanks to its mature trees. These leafy giants are excellent for escaping the summer heat and have become unofficial climbing gyms for adventurous kids.
A seasonal stream cuts through the park from southeast to northwest. It's about 3 feet wide and 2 feet deep - nothing too dramatic, but it adds a nice touch to the landscape. Don't worry about the little ones getting too close; there's a chainlink fence separating it from the playground.
Recreational Amenities
The park caters to children of all ages with two play structures designed for different age groups. The playground area is cushioned with wood chips and features six swings where kids can soar to their hearts' content.
If you're feeling sporty, head over to the basketball court or sand volleyball court. Just remember, it's first-come, first-served, so you might want to arrive early on nice days.
The well-kept grassy areas are well-suited for impromptu games of catch, frisbee, or just sprawling out with a good book.
Walking & Cycling
Winding walking paths thread through the grounds, making it easy to take a peaceful stroll. These paths give you nice views of the pond and canal while connecting the different areas of the park.
Many cyclists appreciate these paved paths as a calmer alternative to the surrounding busy streets of McMillan, Five Mile, and Cloverdale.
Picnic Areas
Planning a get-together? The park's pavilion comes equipped with picnic tables and some electrical outlets. You'll also find movable picnic tables scattered around the grounds if you prefer to create your own dining spot.
There are plenty of benches positioned around the park, particularly near the playground where you can keep an eye on the kids while taking a breather.
Visitor Information
The on-site parking lot holds about a dozen vehicles. Fair warning - you might need to park in the surrounding neighborhood during busy times.
You'll discover clean restroom facilities and a drinking fountain in a small building near the parking lot - always good to know when you're out with kids or planning to stay awhile.
The park also features a conservation station, adding a bit of educational value to your visit.
Park Dedication
There's a touching plaque in the park that reads: "DeMeyer Park: In Honor of Our Children Arlen, Eugene, Joanna--Dedicated to Children: May They Play Here: In Freedom, With Harmony And Happiness."
This heartfelt dedication really captures what this park is all about - creating a space where the community, especially families and children, can come together and enjoy the simple pleasure of being outdoors.
