Fort Boise Park
About Fort Boise Park
A Glimpse of Boise History
Located in Idaho's capital city, Fort Boise Park spans a generous 33 acres of public green space. The city acquired this land back in 1950 when the Defense Department decided they no longer needed it. Initially covering just over 40 acres, the park underwent a bit of a land swap in 1956 when Boise traded several acres to the Idaho Elks organization for a similarly sized plot off State Street.
Play Ball and Beyond
If you're into sports, Fort Boise Park offers softball fields, a baseball field, and tennis courts ready for action. Beyond organized sports, you'll come across plenty of open grassy areas fantastic for frisbee, picnics, or just lounging around on a sunny day.
The park is also home to a thoughtfully designed community garden with concrete paths leading to each planter box, making gardening accessible for seniors and folks with mobility challenges. For the skateboarding crowd, the in-ground skate park offers plenty of transition features that accommodate everyone from beginners to more advanced riders looking to hone their skills.
Trail Adventures Await
One of Fort Boise's cozy features is its access to numerous hiking and biking trails that wind into the foothills. Unlike some of Boise's more crowded outdoor spaces, these trails offer breathing room along with beautiful views of downtown.
Mountain biking enthusiasts will appreciate the well-maintained bike park that's particularly welcoming to newcomers. If you're just getting into trail riding, this is a great spot to build confidence before tackling more challenging terrain - and you don't even have to leave the city.
Pup Paradise
Dog owners will appreciate that The park features a spacious, enclosed dog park where your four-legged friends can run free without a leash. You'll come across waste cleanup stations throughout, making it easy to keep the area clean for everyone. While your pup can roam the enclosed area freely, remember that dogs should be kept under control or leashed when exploring the surrounding trails.
Comfort and Convenience
Getting to Fort Boise Park is hassle-free with both on-site and on-street parking available. The large parking area serves both the park and the adjacent Military Reserve. Restroom facilities are open during the warmer months, however you'll need to use the portable toilets during winter when the main facilities close.
Need a spot for lunch? Settle in at one of the covered picnic tables scattered within the grounds. Drinking fountains are available when you need to hydrate, and mature trees provide welcome shade when the Idaho sun is doing its thing.
Community Connections
The park regularly transforms into a community hub hosting various events, including the occasional concert. If you're planning a gathering of your own, the baseball and softball diamonds can be rented for a small fee - excellent for family reunions, birthday celebrations, or friendly tournaments.
Good to Know
Before you pack your cooler, note that alcoholic beverages (including beer and wine) aren't allowed in the park. Also, if you're heading to the skate park, leave motorized vehicles and electric mobility devices behind - they're prohibited in that area.
Fort Boise Park is a versatile recreational space close to downtown, with options for sports, trails, gardening, or simply enjoying some fresh air in a convenient urban setting.
