Terry Day Park
About Terry Day Park
A Piece of Boise History
Tucked away in Boise, Idaho lies the 7-acre Terry Day Park, a green sanctuary with a heartwarming backstory. The park came to life in 2006 when Patrick O. Day donated the land to honor his late wife, Terry Day. With its sweeping views of downtown Boise, this peaceful retreat has become a beloved community space where nature and recreation blend seamlessly.
Natural Beauty All Around
Walking through Terry Day Park feels like stepping into a living postcard. A mix of mature trees and younger plantings create welcome shade spots - absolute lifesavers during those scorching Idaho summers. A gentle gravel pathway meanders throughout, ideal for a morning jog or an evening stroll to clear your mind. The path circles around a serene pond, offering a tranquil loop that somehow makes you forget you're still in the city.
Cast a Line or Watch Wildlife
If fishing is your thing, you're in luck. The park's fishing pond is home to several species including bluegill, largemouth bass, and pumpkinseed - making it an ideal spot to teach kids the patience of angling or to simply enjoy a quiet afternoon with your fishing rod.
The pond isn't just for fishers, though. It's a bustling wildlife hub where ducks and geese often paddle about, sometimes with fluffy little ones in tow during spring and summer. There's something magical about watching children's faces light up as they observe these feathered families go about their day.
Get Your Game On
For those with a competitive streak, Terry Day Park doesn't disappoint. The park has tennis courts that have been adapted to also accommodate the increasingly popular sport of pickleball. Whether you're a tennis veteran or a pickleball novice, these courts work for both sports.
Prefer something less structured? The park's open fields provide plenty of space for throwing a frisbee, playing catch, or organizing an impromptu soccer match with friends.
Playground Adventures
The modern playground is a highlight for families visiting Terry Day Park. Kids of all ages gravitate toward the park's standout feature - a thrilling zip line that's relatively rare in Boise's park system. Of course, traditional slides and swings round out the play area, ensuring there's something for everyone.
The thoughtful layout means parents can easily keep an eye on their adventurers while still enjoying the park's scenic beauty - a win-win for everyone.
Picnic Perfect
Picnics are a popular activity at the park. Terry Day offers a covered shelter with multiple metal picnic tables, making it an excellent choice for birthday celebrations or family get-togethers. If you prefer something more spontaneous, you'll discover individual tables scattered across the grounds, many nestled under the cooling canopy of shade trees.
During warmer months, these picnic spots become natural gathering places for the community, filling the park with laughter and conversation.
A Haven for Pollinators
Since June 2018, the park has featured a special pollinator garden near the Overland Road parking area. This thoughtful addition - created through a partnership between the Golden Eagle Audubon Society and FarWest Landscape and Garden Center - showcases flowering plants specifically chosen to attract various pollinators.
An educational insect hotel and informative sign make this garden not just beautiful, but enlightening as well - a perfect spot to teach younger visitors about the importance of our buzzing, fluttering friends.
Practical Matters
The park offers clean, accessible restrooms with single-person facilities that accommodate wheelchairs. You'll find water fountains conveniently placed around the grounds when you need to rehydrate.
As for parking, you have two options: a smaller lot near the playground and picnic area, and a larger one accessible from Federal Way. Note that the main parking area fills up quickly with space for only about ten vehicles, so arriving early on busy days is a smart move.
