About the Location
Historic Background
Perched on a bluff south of downtown Des Moines, MacRae Park spreads across nearly 51 acres of urban greenspace, blending natural beauty with fun recreational spots. While it started its life as South Park back in 1897, the name changed in 1919 to honor Donald MacRae, who sadly became Iowa's first casualty of World War I.
Stunning City Views
If you're after Instagram-worthy shots of Des Moines, this is your spot. MacRae Park features excellent views of the city skyline. The recently constructed EMC lookout delivers breathtaking panoramic vistas of downtown, complete with covered benches where you can sit and soak in the scenery. The view is especially nice in the evening when the city lights come on.
A Fresh New Look
The park underwent a seven-year, $2.75 million renovation project that was completed in 2023. This renovation updated MacRae while preserving its historical elements. New walking paths, improved road layouts, and modernized recreational areas have made the park more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
Play Areas for All Ages
The natural playscape features carved logs and climbing structures for children. The water feature includes moveable parts and a pump that children can interact with. When temperatures rise, the splash pad offers a welcome cool-down spot with its nature-inspired design, while nearby sand play areas complete the outdoor adventure experience. Tennis enthusiasts can enjoy a match on the courts for more active recreation.
Perfect Picnic Spots
Scattered throughout the grounds are multiple picnic areas with a mix of covered and open-air tables. You'll find several grilling stations conveniently placed near shaded spots, making this an ideal place for family get-togethers or casual outdoor meals.
For special occasions, the historic Walker Shelter - a WPA project from 1939 - is available to rent. This well-maintained facility works beautifully for birthday parties, family reunions, and even intimate weddings. Its large windows connect you to the natural surroundings while providing protection from the elements.
Historical Touches
Take a stroll to MacRae Park Pond, formerly known as Lake Elizabeth, which was painstakingly hand-dug by the Works Progress Administration during the 1930s. Recent improvements include new bridges spanning the pond and fishing platforms that let you get up close to the water - well-suited for a peaceful afternoon of fishing or simply watching the ripples.
Finding Your Way
Located near the Southwest 9th Street corridor, MacRae Park is part of Des Moines' urban landscape. The terrain varies with some steep inclines, creating distinct sections around the grounds that give the park its unique character.
The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 10PM, with convenient parking available. The park is suitable for recreation, family picnics, or simply enjoying the city views.
