About the Location
A Touch of History
Found in West Des Moines, Peony Park spans 8 acres of what was once aptly named Peony Farm. Established in 1999, this green space carries a fascinating backstory - it was previously owned by Jay Norwood "Ding" Darling, a Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist who doubled as a passionate conservationist. True to its roots, the park comes alive around Memorial Day when peonies burst into bloom, painting the landscape with vibrant colors that honor its floral heritage.
Places to Play
Looking for a spot to hang out with friends and family? The park's picnic shelter comes equipped with a grill and operates on a casual first-come basis. There are plenty of picnic tables scattered throughout, making it excellent for impromptu gatherings or planned celebrations.
If you're bringing the little ones along, you can find two separate playground areas - one designed specifically for the 2-5 year old crowd and another that caters to 5-12 year olds. The recently upgraded equipment is designed to be inclusive for children of all abilities.
Got a competitive streak? Try out the non-lighted tennis court (which doubles as a pickleball court when needed) or shoot some hoops at the basketball court - a favorite spot for locals of all ages.
Explore the Grounds
Need to clear your head or get some steps in? The park features a paved 0.35-mile loop trail (though some regular walkers swear it's closer to 0.75 miles) that circles the entire park. It's meant for a peaceful stroll, a brisk jog, or walking your four-legged friend.
The large open field at the heart of the park invites impromptu games of catch, frisbee, or whatever strikes your fancy. There's even a backstop available if you're in the mood for some casual baseball or softball. When you need a breather, find one of the shaded benches around the park and take in the scenery.
Restrooms are available from April 15 to October 15 (weather permitting), and they're spacious enough to accommodate strollers. You'll also find water fountains to stay hydrated and a convenient parking lot when you arrive.
Neighborhood Vibes
Tucked into a residential area, Peony Park offers a peaceful retreat within the neighborhood. It's dog-friendly too, so you can bring your pup along to enjoy the fresh air.
You'll often see neighborhood kids making new friends and neighbors catching up while their children play.
Peony Park combines its floral history with a pleasant space where West Des Moines residents can play, relax, and enjoy nature close to home.
