About the Location

Peaceful Neighborhood Retreat

Belize Park, located at the corner of Fountain Street and West Summit Street in the Water Hill neighborhood of Ann Arbor, Michigan, is a small, half-acre neighborhood park. The park offers a peaceful retreat, nestled in a shaded hollow below street level, creating a tranquil environment ideal for quiet relaxation or leisurely activities.

The park was officially dedicated in June 1975 by Mayor Albert Wheeler, in honor of Ann Arbor's sister city, Belize City, Belize.

Amenities and Features

The park features a compact play area designed for children and picnic tables for community gatherings or simple outdoor meals. A notable feature of Belize Park is its rain garden, established to manage rainwater runoff while enhancing the area's natural beauty.

The rain garden, planted with native vegetation, serves to filter and absorb water, reducing flooding and improving water quality. Over the years, volunteers, including youth from programs such as the YMCA Youth Volunteer Corps, have been involved in maintaining this feature, demonstrating community stewardship.

Community Connection

The park's connection to the surrounding neighborhood is integral to its identity, reflecting the diverse and dynamic community of Water Hill. Although small, Belize Park stands out as a cherished green space fostering a sense of community and environmental awareness.
