About the Location
Natural Treasures
Nestled within Ann Arbor's urban landscape, Dolph Nature Area spans 57 acres of pristine wilderness that feels worlds away from city life. What makes this park truly special? It contains the only two naturally formed lakes in Ann Arbor - First and Second Sister Lakes.
These aren't just any lakes, but kettle lakes sculpted by glaciers thousands of years ago, leaving behind geological time capsules that form the heart of this sanctuary. The park unfolds like a patchwork quilt of ecosystems - from tranquil open waters to lush wetlands, mysterious marshes, dense forests, and sprawling shrublands.
This diversity creates a haven where plants and wildlife thrive together in a delicate balance. The sunset here is worth experiencing, as golden light spills across the lakes while birds settle in for the evening - it's a peaceful scene that makes you forget you're still within city limits.
Exploring the Trails
Winding through this natural oasis is a network of hiking trails that invite exploration without demanding Olympic-level fitness. The paths have a wild character - narrow and natural, giving you the sense of discovering something rather than just following a prescribed route.
As you meander along, you'll come across scenic overlooks that frame postcard-worthy views of the lakes and surrounding wetlands. Take a moment at the interpretive panels scattered throughout - they tell the fascinating story of how glaciers sculpted this landscape into what you see today.
Depending on when you visit, you might share the trail with the local residents - deer stepping quietly through the underbrush, squirrels darting between trees, melodious songbirds, or even raccoons going about their business. In warmer months, keep an eye out for reptiles like snakes enjoying the sunshine (from a respectful distance, of course).
Taking a Break from the Bustle
Dolph Nature Area offers something increasingly rare in our busy world - quiet space for thought and relaxation. Fishing enthusiasts can try their luck at the lakes, but you'll want to bring weedless lures as the underwater vegetation can be abundant.
The waterside docks and benches provide perfect spots to sit and simply be present with nature. While you won't find playgrounds or sports fields here, that's precisely the point - this is a place for walking, jogging, spotting birds, or enjoying a peaceful picnic at one of the picnic tables.
It's remarkable how quickly the sounds of nearby traffic fade away, replaced by rustling leaves and birdsong.
Know Before You Go
The trails here have a refreshingly untamed quality compared to more manicured parks in Ann Arbor. During peak growing seasons, expect some sections to be a bit overgrown - it's all part of the authentic nature experience.
Summer visitors should come prepared with insect repellent and consider wearing long sleeves and pants. The marshland environment is paradise for mosquitoes and spiders, who don't discriminate between nature enthusiasts and casual visitors.
A Bit of History
The park began as a modest 26-acre gift from Ralph Dolph in 1962 and has since grown to more than double its original size. Through all its changes, it has remained true to its purpose as a preserved natural space where city dwellers can reconnect with the wild.
Each season transforms the landscape - autumn paints the foliage in vibrant hues, while winter blankets everything in snow, creating a great canvas for spotting animal tracks. For those with additional exploration energy, Dolph connects to Lakewood Nature Area, extending your adventure possibilities.
You can easily reach the park via Wagner and Liberty roads or public transit, making it accessible whether you're a local or just visiting Ann Arbor.
The Practical Stuff
There's a small parking lot available, but be aware it can get muddy after rain. The park doesn't have restroom facilities, so plan your visit accordingly.
Open daily from 7AM to 10PM, Dolph is also dog-friendly, making it a favorite spot for locals and their four-legged companions. If you're planning your day, note that the complete trail system can be walked in about half an hour - meant for a quick nature fix or leisurely stroll rather than an all-day hiking expedition.
