Situated in the bustling heart of downtown Detroit, Lafayette Greens is a refreshing patch of green amid the city's concrete landscape. Since 2014, this half-acre urban garden has transformed what was once just another vacant lot into something quite special. Managed by The Greening of Detroit non-profit, it sits right next to the iconic Coney Islands and across from the stately Westin Book Cadillac Hotel - prime real estate that's now dedicated to plants rather than buildings.

This little green space reflects Detroit's ongoing efforts to revitalize forgotten areas, adding greenery to the heart of downtown.

Sustainable Design

Walk through Lafayette Greens and you can find 35 raised beds bursting with chemical-free produce and flowers. But there's more happening here than meets the eye. The entire space has been thoughtfully designed to tackle some serious environmental challenges - from managing stormwater runoff to addressing soil contamination and improving the air we breathe.

Clever features like an urban bioswale help capture and filter rainwater, while the drought-resistant Fescue lawns mean less watering is needed to keep things looking lush. These features demonstrate practical sustainability throughout the space.

Biodiversity

As a certified pollinator garden, Lafayette Greens buzzes with life. The plants here aren't just pretty - they're specifically chosen to attract butterflies, native bees, honey bees, and birds. In a downtown area where wildlife habitat is scarce, this garden creates a small but mighty ecosystem.

You'll also spot heirloom fruit trees (including some lovely apple trees), vines, and berry bushes throughout the space. It's an unusual collection of food-producing plants in the middle of downtown Detroit.

Community Impact

Beyond being a pretty place to visit, Lafayette Greens works hard for the community. It represents a demonstration garden where people can learn about urban agriculture done right.

Perhaps most importantly, the garden produces over 800 pounds of fresh food annually, all of which goes to local organizations like Gleaner's Community Food Bank and Freedom House. It's urban farming with a purpose - feeding people who need it most.

The garden comes alive through its seasonal programming. From yoga sessions and live music to hands-on gardening workshops, there's often something happening among the greenery.

Recycled Materials and Art

Look closely and you'll notice that sustainability extends to the very bones of this place. Broken sidewalk pieces from around Detroit have found new life as garden pavers. The sheds are crafted from reclaimed pallet wood and salvaged doors, while children's garden planters are cleverly made from repurposed steel drums.
