About Tower Hill Park in Minneapolis
Tower Hill Park is a 4.7-acre urban park located in the historic Prospect Park neighborhood of southeast Minneapolis, Minnesota. Bounded by University Avenue to the northeast and quiet residential streets to the other sides, the park provides a tranquil retreat. The park is best known for being home to the iconic Witch's Hat Water Tower, officially called the Prospect Park Water Tower. Designed by Norwegian architect Frederick W. Cappelen, the tower was built in 1913 and stands at one of the highest natural points in the city. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers panoramic views of the city, but it is open to the public just one day a year during the Pratt Ice Cream Social.
The park's topography features a mix of wooded, hilly terrain and grassy open spaces. The upper sections are densely wooded, creating a peaceful and shaded environment, while the lower areas feature grassy lawns ideal for walking or relaxing. Walking paths wind through the park, allowing visitors to explore its natural beauty, including a prairie garden maintained by the Prospect Park Garden Club since its installation in 2000. The steep slopes and wooded trails provide a sense of seclusion despite the park’s urban location.
Tower Hill Park is primarily a space for passive recreation rather than active sports. It includes a tennis court, a drinking fountain, and scenic walking paths. While there is no playground equipment, the park's natural setting and scenic vantage points make it popular among walkers, runners, and those seeking stunning views of the Minneapolis skyline. The park's role as a local landmark and its storied history contribute to its appeal as a cherished green space for residents and visitors alike.
