About the Location
A Glimpse into the Past
Tucked between University Avenue and Interstate 94 in Saint Paul's Union Park neighborhood, Iris Park offers a peaceful green escape from the urban hustle. This little oasis isn't just a pretty face - it's actually the last remaining piece of the historic Iris Lake Park amusement park that once brought joy to locals back in the late 1800s. Now under the care of St. Paul Parks and Recreation Department, it continues its legacy as a natural haven for nearby residents, workers, and anyone passing through.
Layout and Landscape
The park unfolds in three distinct areas. Up north along University Avenue, you'll discover an open, sunny grassy space with a small paved seating area. There's a fountain there too, but it's currently taking a break from its splashing duties.
At the heart of the park lies its crown jewel - an oval-shaped pond that instantly draws your eye. When operating, its central water fountain creates a gentle soundtrack that perfectly complements an afternoon of relaxation. In springtime, you might spot some geese and their fluffy goslings making themselves at home. A concrete overlook and surrounding footpaths let you take in the serene water views from different angles.
The southern section offers a more shaded experience, with grassy areas dotted with benches and picnic tables nestled under a protective canopy of trees. On those scorching Minnesota summer days, the abundant shade across the park makes it an especially welcome retreat.
Modern Touches
In 2016, Iris Park got a bit of a makeover to better connect it with University Avenue and the Green Line light rail. These thoughtful renovations have made the park more integrated with its urban surroundings and more accessible to the neighborhood. Speaking of accessibility, its location near the Fairview Avenue Green Line stop means you can easily reach this green location via public transit.
The park is accessible to everyone, with wheelchair-friendly paths and ramps throughout. You'll find textured curb cuts at every entrance - small details that make a big difference for visitors with mobility challenges.
What to Expect
Iris Park is designed for quieter moments rather than active recreation. You won't find playgrounds or restrooms here - it's really a place for contemplation and gentle strolls.
Oakley Square sits in the northwest corner, offering yet another pleasant spot to sit and watch the world go by. The park has become especially popular by residents from the adjacent senior home, who often visit to soak in its tranquil atmosphere.
Though small in size, Iris Park offers something increasingly precious in city life - a calm, green space great for clearing your head, enjoying a peaceful moment, or taking a short, scenic walk within the urban landscape.
