About Iris Park in Saint Paul
Iris Park is a public green space located in the Union Park neighborhood of Saint Paul, Minnesota, situated between University Avenue and Interstate 94. This urban park serves as a peaceful oasis amid the bustling city life, offering residents and visitors a place for relaxation and recreation.
The park's history dates back to the late 1800s when it came under the management of the St. Paul Parks and Recreation Department. It is the only remaining part of the historic Iris Lake Park amusement park that once occupied the area. Today, Iris Park plays a vital role in the community, providing a natural retreat for local residents, workers, and visitors.
Iris Park is divided into three main sections. The northern section along University Avenue features an expanse of sunny grass and a small paved seating area with a fountain, though the fountain is not currently functional. The central section is home to an oval-shaped human-made pond, which serves as a focal point of the park. This pond is surrounded by footpaths and includes a concrete overlook, allowing visitors to enjoy the water feature. The southern section of the park consists of a grassy area dotted with benches and picnic tables, all shaded by a canopy of trees.
In 2016, Iris Park underwent renovations to better connect it with University Avenue and the Green Line light rail, enhancing its accessibility and usability for the neighborhood. The park's location near the Fairview Avenue Green Line stop makes it easily reachable by public transportation, integrating it seamlessly into the urban fabric of Saint Paul.
The park's design prioritizes accessibility, with wheelchair-friendly paths and ramps throughout, including textured curb cuts at every entrance. This thoughtful layout ensures that Iris Park is welcoming and usable for all members of the community, including those with mobility challenges.
