Set in the heart of Columbia, Stephens Lake Park stretches across 116 acres of land that's popular with locals. As a Level II Arboretum, this green oasis showcases diverse tree collections - from vibrant redbuds to majestic oaks, towering conifers to productive nut trees. Spring brings a canvas of flowering trees, while fall transforms the landscape into a symphony of warm colors.

Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the thoughtfully designed Darwin and Axie Hindman Discovery Garden and the eco-friendly rain gardens scattered throughout. What we love about this park is its variety - some areas are well-manicured, while others are left more natural and wild.

Splash and Play

The park features an 11-acre lake, where you can swim, fish, or paddle around in non-motorized boats. From May through September, the sandy beach area opens up for some serious summertime fun. Just a heads-up - the lake water occasionally has a distinctive aroma, but the sandy bottom feels great underfoot while swimming.

Kids (and let's be honest, adults too) flock to the Stephens Spraygrounds during summer months. With various water features that spray, splash, and surprise, it's a hit with the younger crowd. You might want to pack water shoes though, as the ground can be a bit uneven in spots.

Paths to Wander

Looking to get your steps in? The park offers beautifully paved trails including a quick 0.6-mile loop around the lake and a more substantial 1.7-mile perimeter trail. The outer loop throws in some inclines that'll get your heart pumping if you're after a more challenging workout.

Families will feel right at home with three different playgrounds scattered throughout the grounds. Kids particularly gravitate toward the large climbing rock - it's always buzzing with activity. For those seeking tranquility, the hammock village provides an excellent spot to sway in the breeze with a good book. Don't miss the picturesque waterfalls that make for incredible photo opportunities within the park.

Gathering Spaces

The park shines as a community gathering place with several picnic pavilions overlooking the serene lake. These aren't your basic shelters either - they come equipped with electrical outlets, lighting, and double grills, making them ideal for everything from family reunions to birthday celebrations and even weddings.

Dog owners, rejoice! The park welcomes your leashed four-legged friends, with some water fountains even featuring special spigots for thirsty pups. Clean restrooms are conveniently located across the grounds, however keep in mind they typically close during the winter months.

When winter blankets the landscape, Stephens Lake Park transforms into a cold-weather playground featuring a premier sledding hill that draws thrill-seekers of all ages. When temperatures drop enough, ice skating on the frozen lake becomes a magical winter tradition. The Collins Shelter with its inviting fire pit offers a cozy spot to warm up after outdoor adventures.

The park hosts various cultural events throughout the year. Its outdoor amphitheater hosts concerts, while annual festivals like the Treeline Music Festival (formerly Roots N Blues) and Art in the Park draw crowds from across the region. Whether you're looking for active recreation or peaceful contemplation, this park offers activities throughout all seasons.
