About the Location
A Bit of History
What we now know as this nearly 46-acre park started its life as Northgate Park, acquired piece by piece beginning in 1957. In 1991, it was renamed to honor Anita B. Gorman, a remarkable woman whose dedication to conservation and civic engagement left an indelible mark on Kansas City.
What Makes It Special
The park features the Northland Fountain - the first fountain built north of the Missouri River in KC. It stands out in a city famous for its fountains, and the surrounding benches offer a nice spot for a moment of peaceful contemplation.
You'll also find the Clay County Veterans' Memorial here, a thoughtful tribute to the service and sacrifice of local veterans - a quiet place that reminds us of what truly matters.
Getting Active
Feel like stretching your legs? The park's walking trails wind through the grounds, offering paved paths meant for your morning jog or an afternoon stroll. Many trails are tucked under a canopy of trees, providing welcome shade during hot Missouri summers.
If you're the sporty type, check out the tennis courts or the baseball diamond. Nothing like a little friendly competition in the fresh air!
Nature's Touch
The mature trees across the park don't just provide shade - they display beautiful fall foliage when autumn arrives. The changing colors make for a nice seasonal visit.
Despite being near major highways, the park remains relatively peaceful. You can find quiet spots even with the city nearby.
Community Vibes
The open green spaces here are excellent for all sorts of outdoor activities. Feel free to bring your four-legged friend along - the park is dog-friendly, but you won't find a fenced dog park area.
The park offers a mix of memorial spaces, recreational areas, and natural scenery that accommodate various activities, from quiet reflection to gathering with friends.
Good to Know
Just a heads-up: you won't find picnic tables, playgrounds, or public restrooms here. Also, note that the parking area is a bit of a walk from the fountain, so plan accordingly.
The park welcomes visitors daily from 5 AM to midnight - plenty of time to enjoy a brisk morning walk or an evening visit to see the fountain under the stars.
