About the Location

Playful Sculptures That Delight

Positioned in Kansas City's Lakewood Greenway area, Penguin Park is a 3.42-acre space that stands out from your typical neighborhood playground. What makes it special? For starters, there's a 25-foot-tall penguin greeting you with open flippers! This iconic sculpture is just one of several giant fiberglass animals crafted by Vernon Jones nearly five decades ago, including a kangaroo with a spiral slide hidden inside, a towering giraffe, and an elephant that cleverly doubles as playground support.

These colorful creatures were originally part of Santa's Wonderland displays before finding their permanent home here. The park officially became "Penguin Park" in 1998, and recently, the animal sculptures received a fresh coat of paint, bringing back their vibrant colors that have been enjoyed by Kansas City families for generations.

Play Areas For Everyone

The playground setup here goes beyond the usual swing-and-slide options. You'll come across multiple play zones designed with all ages and abilities in mind. The 23-foot penguin play structure is popular, surrounded by an assortment of climbing challenges for adventurous kiddos.

The park includes plenty of swings, slides, climbing webs, and merry-go-rounds (some with bucket seats for better accessibility). There's even an interactive music station with chimes and xylophones for budding musicians. Got toddlers? They'll love the dedicated turf play area designed just for them, while the synthetic turf throughout much of the playground means no muddy shoes or difficult terrain for strollers and wheelchairs.

When you need a break, head to the covered picnic shelter with multiple tables, or claim one of the standalone picnic spots scattered within the grounds. Restrooms are typically open during the warmer months, making longer visits much more comfortable.

Beyond the Playground

While the playgrounds might steal the show, there's more to discover here. Behind all the play equipment sits a small lake that's popular with local fishing enthusiasts. A paved walking trail circles the water, offering a pleasant 1.8-mile loop that's great for a family stroll or walking the dog.

You'll also find open grassy spaces ideal for throwing a frisbee, having a picnic, or simply lounging with a good book. Grilling facilities are available too, making this a great spot for impromptu cookouts.

A Kansas City Tradition

Penguin Park has been a Kansas City fixture over the years. Adults who played here as children now bring their own kids and grandkids. The park is popular for birthday celebrations and family gatherings, and you'll often see ice cream trucks during summer months.

Located at the intersection of NE Vivion Road and North Norton Avenue, you can find plenty of parking and easy access. The park welcomes visitors daily from 5 AM to midnight, continuing its legacy as one of the most cherished family destinations north of the Missouri River.
