Whimsical Sculptures
Penguin Park is a distinctive and family-friendly public park located in Kansas City, Missouri, within the Lakewood Greenway area. Covering 3.42 acres, the park is particularly known for its whimsical theme centered around giant fiberglass animal sculptures, including a 25-foot-tall iconic penguin, a kangaroo, a giraffe, and an elephant.
These structures, crafted nearly 50 years ago by Vernon Jones, set the park apart as a "destination playground." Originally conceptualized as part of Santa's Wonderland displays, these sculptures became the hallmark of the park, which was officially renamed Penguin Park in 1998.
Playgrounds and Amenities
The park features a variety of amenities designed for recreation and community engagement. It boasts a large playground with equipment catering to children of all ages, including a unique 23-foot penguin play structure.
The grounds include a spacious picnic shelter and additional picnic tables with wide benches that are especially accommodating for families with young children. Other amenities include a turf play area for toddlers, paved walking trails that loop around a small lake, and portable restrooms.
Community Gathering Space

Situated at the intersection of NE Vivion Road and North Norton Avenue, the park is easily accessible and remains a beloved landmark north of the Missouri River.
