A Piece of Lincoln History

The spot at 10th and O Streets in downtown Lincoln has some serious historical cred - it was originally marked as "Market Square" when Lincoln's city planners mapped things out back in 1867. Government Square Park is a small urban retreat today, and while it's not sprawling, it offers a breath of fresh air in Nebraska's capital city.

What You'll Find

The star of this pocket park is undoubtedly the Acklie Fountain, a beautiful limestone water feature that tells a story of Nebraska's roots. Named after Duane and Phyllis Acklie (whose generous gift made it possible), the fountain cleverly incorporates corn and wheat designs - a nod to the agricultural heritage that runs deep in Nebraska's soil.

Depending on when you visit, you might catch the purple asters showing off in front of the fountain, adding a pop of color that transforms with the seasons. Year-round, different flowers take their turn brightening up this downtown space.

Government Square Park isn't going to take up a full day of your itinerary, but it offers something increasingly precious in urban centers - a moment of calm. There are several seating areas where you can take a load off, eat your lunch, or simply watch the fountain's waters while the downtown world rushes by.
