About the Location
A Downtown Urban Oasis
Found in the heart of Lincoln, Nebraska, Union Plaza offers a refreshing six-acre escape from city life. Stretching over three blocks north of "O" Street between 21st and 22nd Streets, this isn't your average urban park.
The plaza emerged as part of the Antelope Valley Project - a $264 million initiative that tackled flood control, transportation improvements, and community revitalization all in one ambitious swing.
Flowing Through the City
At the heart of Union Plaza runs a meandering waterway that's as practical as it is pretty. Connected to Antelope Creek, this gentle stream serves a practical purpose as part of the area's flood control system.
You'll come across several crossings that let you hop across the water as you explore. The park's fountains bring an extra touch of serenity during warmer months, but they take a winter break when temperatures drop.
Inspired by Water
Water isn't just flowing through Union Plaza - it inspired the entire design. As you wander, you'll notice how bollards, planters, and even pavement patterns mimic droplets, splashes, and ripples.
The park embraces sustainability with water-conserving fountain nozzles, LED lighting powered by photovoltaic cells, and permeable pavers that help manage runoff. Art installations scattered throughout the park provide interesting visual elements as you explore.
Natural Touches
Despite its urban setting, the plaza offers plenty of natural elements. Native plants create landscaped areas that bring a touch of wilderness to the concrete surroundings.
The design encourages you to wander and discover - keep an eye out for charming animal statues hidden around corners. You might even spot actual rabbits and other small wildlife. Note that during summer months, ticks can make an appearance, so it's worth taking precautions.
Where Lincoln Comes Together
Union Plaza functions as a community gathering place. Its amphitheater seats 200 people and hosts everything from concerts to theatrical performances.
During market season, Wednesday evenings bring farmers and vendors to the plaza, sometimes accompanied by the folksy sounds of string bands. The atmosphere turns especially magical in the evening hours when the lighting transforms the space.
Trails and Recreation
For the active visitor, Union Plaza connects to Lincoln's extensive trail network. No matter if you're running, walking, or cycling, you can connect to virtually every bike path in the city from here.
Four-legged friends are welcome too - just keep them leashed as you explore. If you're driving to access the trails, it's a good idea to make a mental note of where you parked. With so many branching paths, it's easy to get turned around on your return.
Family-Friendly Features
At the far end of the park, you'll discover a playground that, while not huge, offers plenty of fun for younger visitors. During warm months, its water feature becomes an instant hit with children looking to cool off and play.
Several picnic areas make this a great spot to enjoy an outdoor meal when the weather cooperates.
Handy Amenities
The Jayne Snyder Trails Center is a prominent landmark within Union Plaza. This two-story building offers public meeting spaces, retail options, and houses offices for a community health organization.
When you need refreshments, there's a small café available. Restrooms are available (though hours may vary), and you'll find drinking fountains to keep hydrated during your visit.
