Tranquility Park

History & Origins

Tranquility Park, located near 120th and Maple Streets in Omaha, Nebraska, is a sprawling 392-acre recreational area that has been serving the community since its dedication on June 21, 1970. The park was named in honor of the first moon landing that took place in 1969, with Apollo 13 astronaut John Swigert Jr. present at its dedication ceremony.

Originally cornfields, the land was acquired by the city in 1967 through condemnation proceedings. Over the years, Tranquility Park has evolved into a versatile outdoor space catering to various recreational activities.

Recreational Facilities

The park is particularly known for its extensive sports facilities, including numerous soccer and baseball fields.

One of the park's notable features is its network of trails, which are popular among hikers, walkers, and mountain bikers. The trails wind through forests and along ravines, offering visitors a chance to experience nature within city limits.

During spring, wildflowers and mushrooms can be spotted along these paths.

Future Development

Tranquility Park is currently undergoing a significant $54 million expansion project, set to transform it into a premier youth multi-sport complex. The improvements, scheduled to begin in 2025 and complete by 2027, include the addition of synthetic turf fields, enhanced guest amenities, improved parking, and concessions.

The project aims to make Tranquility Park more inclusive for all recreational activities while preserving its natural areas.

The park's development is expected to spur growth in the surrounding area, with plans for new hotels, restaurants, and retail businesses along North 120th Street, between Maple and Fort Streets.
