About the Location
A Park Born from the Stars
Tucked away near 120th and Maple Streets in Omaha, Nebraska, Tranquility Park spans 392 acres of green space since its opening on June 21, 1970. Here's a fun fact: the park was actually named to commemorate the first moon landing in 1969, with Apollo 13 astronaut John Swigert Jr. himself attending the dedication ceremony.
Before becoming the recreational haven it is today, this land was nothing but cornfields until the city acquired it in 1967. Over the decades, it's transformed from simple farmland into a versatile outdoor space in Omaha.
Play Ball (or Soccer, or Tennis...)
For sports enthusiasts, Tranquility Park offers soccer and baseball fields that attract teams and families throughout the season. Soccer enthusiasts particularly appreciate the mix of grass and turf options, with Field 1 standing out as the only synthetic turf field currently available.
Most fields offer sideline seating and small bleacher sections, so you can cheer on your favorite players comfortably. Beyond team sports, the park features tennis courts and a small lake that adds a tranquil water element to the landscape.
When nature calls (the other kind), you'll discover restrooms at the concession stand area and portable facilities scattered throughout the complex.
Trails That Tell Stories
The park features a network of winding trails that meander through forests and along scenic ravines. These paths provide a natural escape within city limits, where you can disconnect from urban life without leaving the city.
In spring, keep your eyes peeled for wildflowers and mushrooms that dot the landscape. The wildlife viewing isn't bad either - wild turkeys often parade around with their chicks during summer months, creating those perfect "wish-you-had-your-camera" moments.
Mountain Biking Paradise
For those who prefer two wheels to two feet, Tranquility Park is popular with Omaha's mountain biking community. Thanks to dedicated local trail organizations, the paths are well-maintained and clearly marked, so you won't find yourself accidentally veering onto the expert route as a newbie.
The trail system is cleverly divided by Fort Street. If you're just starting out, head to the north side where gentler trails offer small mounds and manageable inclines that build confidence without overwhelming.
Ready for something more challenging? The south side delivers with rooty climbs, bermed descents, and various jumps that will test your skills. Covering approximately 10 miles for a complete lap, it's one of the longer riding options in the Omaha area.
The trails accommodate everyone from beginners to experienced riders seeking technical challenges.
Ice, Ice Baby
A unique feature that sets Tranquility Park apart is the Moylan Ice Plex located within its grounds. This facility hosts hockey games, tournaments, and skating lessons year-round. It's become a popular spot for children's birthday parties and teen nights, complete with a snack bar for refueling after all that skating.
The park welcomes four-legged friends too, with trails that accommodate both human and canine adventurers. Various user groups share the paths in a friendly atmosphere.
Looking to the Future
Tranquility Park is undergoing a $54 million expansion project in the coming years. Set to begin in 2025 and finish by 2027, these improvements will transform it into a premier youth multi-sport complex with synthetic turf fields, better guest amenities, expanded parking, and improved concessions.
The development plans to enhance recreational facilities while preserving the natural areas of the park. The project may influence the surrounding area, with plans for new hotels, restaurants, and retail businesses along North 120th Street between Maple and Fort Streets.
Making Tranquility Park not just a recreation destination but a neighborhood catalyst.
