About Sunset Park
Park Overview
Found in southeastern Las Vegas, Sunset Park sprawls across an impressive 323 acres of urban oasis. Since opening its gates in 1967, it's grown to become one of Clark County's largest green spaces.
You'll come across this natural retreat conveniently situated near Harry Reid International Airport, with Sunset Road marking its northern boundary, Eastern Avenue to the west, and Warm Springs Road running along the south.
Lake and Fishing
At the heart of the park sits a serene 14-acre lake that draws visitors year-round. The stocking schedule is managed by the Nevada Department of Fish and Wildlife and follows a seasonal rhythm: rainbow trout go in weekly from November through March, making winter a surprisingly productive time to cast a line, while channel catfish are stocked monthly from April through October. The lake also holds bluegill, largemouth bass, redear sunfish, and black crappie.

A paved 1.5-mile walking path circles the lake, ideal for a casual stroll or your daily cardio. The water attracts a surprising variety of birds and waterfowl - ducks, geese, and even swans make regular appearances, so don't forget your camera if you enjoy wildlife photography.

Lakeside Landmarks
One of the more unusual sights near the lake is a large stone Moai statue - the type of monolithic figure associated with Easter Island. It didn't start its life in a park, though. The statue was originally carved to stand at the entrance of the Aku Aku Restaurant at the Stardust Hotel, one of the classic casino properties that defined mid-century Las Vegas. When the restaurant eventually closed, the statue was relocated to Sunset Park largely through the efforts of Paulina Jimeno de Bosch, the mother of the Chilean Consul in Las Vegas at the time. It's a small but striking reminder of old Las Vegas sitting quietly alongside the water.

Natural Ecosystems
Sunset Park features diverse ecosystems. Venture to the southern section and you'll discover mesquite-dune trails winding through genuine desert landscape. It's interesting to experience desert terrain right within city limits.

These natural areas serve as home to an array of desert wildlife - from migratory birds and waterfowl to rabbits, roadrunners, and occasionally quail. For the best wildlife viewing, try visiting during the golden hours of dawn or dusk when the desert residents are most active.
Recreation Facilities
The park offers many recreational options. Sports enthusiasts can take advantage of 8 tennis courts, 8 basketball courts, 7 sand volleyball courts, 9 softball fields, and 2 Little League fields. There's also a disc golf course that meanders pleasantly through the grounds.
Families with kids will appreciate the multiple playgrounds scattered across the park and a seasonal splash pad (typically open from April 1st) for those hot Vegas days. The pickleball complex features 22 courts with lighting for evening games.

Amenities and Improvements
The park has 31 designated picnic areas, with capacities ranging from 50 up to 1,000 people - useful context whether you're planning a small family outing or a large group event. Tables and benches are often shaded by mature trees, and restroom facilities are available in various locations throughout the grounds.
Beyond the lakeside loop, four walking trails wind through the park, together adding up to about 3.5 miles of pathway. Combined with the open green spaces and shaded picnic areas, the grounds give you plenty of room to spread out regardless of how busy things get.
Events
During the year, Sunset Park transforms into a venue for community gatherings, including Clark County's signature Age of Chivalry Renaissance Festival.
The park's generous space and varied facilities make it a natural choice for all sorts of outdoor activities. Weekend visitors might stumble upon community drum circles or fitness groups taking advantage of the open areas - just one more way this park brings Las Vegans together in the great outdoors.
