About the Location

Riverside Urban Retreat

Nestled at the corner of First and Virginia Streets in downtown Reno, City Plaza is a modest 1-acre concrete space with a prime spot along the Truckee River. This urban space offers nice views of both the flowing water and Reno's cityscape. Standing where the historic Mapes Hotel and Casino once did (until the city purchased the land in 2005), it's a popular spot for both locals and visitors.

Eye-Catching Art

What really makes City Plaza stand out are its remarkable art installations. The massive BELIEVE sculpture (added in 2015) has quickly become an Instagram favorite, while the vibrant Space Whale sculpture (2017) adds a splash of whimsy to the urban landscape. These distinctive art pieces have become recognizable Reno landmarks.

Don't miss the Clock of Reno either - it's both functional and a thoughtful nod to the city's past. These artistic elements give the plaza character and provide perfect photo backdrops.

Where Reno Comes Together

City Plaza really comes alive as a community gathering spot throughout the year. From the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony in November (complete with local craft vendors) to regular Bike Night Reno meetups at the Space Whale on Wednesday evenings during warmer months, there's often something happening here.

The space hosts various festivals during the year, including some lovely light celebrations that transform the plaza after dark. History buffs will appreciate the informational display posts in the northeast corner, featuring historic photos and Reno facts curated by local historian Alicia Barber.

Play and Relaxation

The open design of City Plaza has made it a natural hangout for skateboarders, with local youth often practicing their tricks on the smooth paved surfaces. It's an informal skate spot where you'll often see people practicing their skills.

While the plaza is mostly concrete, you can access the Truckee River via steps leading down to the water. After trying your luck at nearby casinos or exploring downtown, you can dip your toes in the cool river for a break from the Nevada heat.

Good to Know

City Plaza welcomes four-legged friends (though you'll want to keep them leashed). It's open daily from 6AM to 10PM, located at the heart of downtown.

The location couldn't be more convenient for downtown exploration, and the plaza takes on a special charm in the evening when the river reflects the city lights.

Note that you won't find public restrooms or dedicated picnic areas within the plaza itself. Security personnel frequently patrol the area, helping ensure a safe experience for everyone enjoying this riverside urban space.
