About the Location
A Riverside Gem with History
Situated in Buffalo's Riverside neighborhood, this historic 22-acre green space showcases thoughtful urban planning. Designed in 1898 by the Olmsted Brothers firm, Riverside Park completed the Buffalo park system envisioned by their famous father, Frederick Law Olmsted Sr.
Perched on a bluff overlooking the Niagara River, the park offers stunning waterway views and some pretty spectacular sunsets. What began as a former private picnic ground transformed into a public space where residents could connect with the river and enjoy active recreation.
Original Charm
The initial design didn't hold back on amenities. A formal fountain and music court served as centerpieces, while carriage drives wound through the landscape. Ball fields catered to the sports enthusiasts, and a series of shallow "minnow pools" meandered charmingly through a tree grove.
The park expanded in 1912 when an additional 17 acres were added to its southern portion, creating an even more generous public space.
Adapting Through the Decades
The 1950s brought change when the New York State Thruway (I-190) construction interrupted the park's direct river access. Fortunately, a pedestrian bridge was later added to reconnect visitors with the waterfront.
Today, Riverside Park continues its legacy as a community gathering place. While time has altered or removed some original elements, restoration efforts have breathed new life into certain historic features.
Get Moving
Active types will appreciate the variety of recreational facilities here. Break a sweat on the basketball courts, play ball on the baseball fields, or join a game on the football field and soccer fields. When summer heat hits, the public swimming pool offers a refreshing escape.
Scattered across the grounds are several pavilions that make perfect spots for family picnics or community get-togethers. The expansive green spaces invite impromptu games of frisbee or simply lounging with a good book.
Natural Respite
Take a deep breath among the abundant trees and green spaces that create pockets of shade and natural beauty throughout. It's a peaceful setting for birdwatching or simply enjoying a moment of nature within city limits.
The rock garden area presents a modern interpretation of those original minnow pools, a thoughtful nod to the park's historic design.
For the Little Ones
Kids have their own dedicated playground area, but the swing set is on the smaller side. This section is generally where you can find younger children playing, while teens and adults tend to gravitate toward other areas of the park.
Preservation in Progress
In 2014, the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy reimagined the original minnow pools as a dry rain garden, aiming to recapture some of the park's historic character.
You'll notice improved cleanliness thanks to ongoing maintenance efforts in recent years. While permanent restroom facilities are limited, portable toilets have been added for visitor convenience.
