About Silver Lake Park
A Journey Through Time
Located on Staten Island's north shore, Silver Lake Park sits comfortably between Forest Avenue, Victory Boulevard, and Clove Road. At 209 acres, this green oasis features a gorgeous reservoir at its heart that tells quite a story.
What we now know as Silver Lake began as a natural spring-fed pool formed after the ice age. Throughout the 19th century, locals knew it by two names: Silver Lake and Fresh Pond - both equally fitting for this glistening body of water.
From Party Spot to Sporting Haven
The 1800s saw Silver Lake wearing many hats. The area once housed a casino and saloon where Staten Islanders could kick back and socialize. Meanwhile, enterprising companies harvested ice from the frozen lake during winter months.
But it wasn't all business - Silver Lake was the place to be for boating and ice skating enthusiasts. The lake even had its moment of glory hosting the National Skating Amateur Championship races in February 1897. Imagine the excitement as competitors glided across that frozen surface!
Transformation to Utility
By 1913, practical needs took precedence when the Board of Water Supply drained the natural lake and transformed it into a working reservoir. Four years later, Silver Lake became the terminal point for New York City's Catskill water supply system - a critical piece of infrastructure for the growing metropolis.
The reservoir served New Yorkers faithfully until 1971, when it was superseded by an underground storage tank system. At the time, this hidden marvel was reportedly the largest of its kind worldwide.

The Park Takes Shape
As the years passed, the area surrounding the reservoir evolved into something special. The 1920s brought new life with additional trees, shrubs, and colorful flowerbeds enhancing the natural landscape.
1929 saw the addition of a golf course and other recreational facilities, broadening the park's appeal. Interestingly, part of today's park incorporates land from the former Marine Cemetery, where 19th-century immigrants who succumbed to contagious diseases after arriving in America found their final resting place - a poignant reminder of our shared history.
What You'll Find Today
Now Silver Lake Park is a recreational haven for Staten Islanders. Well-maintained paved paths encircle the reservoir, meant for your morning jog, afternoon stroll, or weekend bike ride.
Dog owners, you're in luck! The park features a thoughtfully designed dog run with three separate sections for different-sized pups, so your four-legged friend can safely socialize and burn off energy. If you're bringing the kids, there's a secure playground with swings and equipment that younger children especially enjoy.
Natural Splendor
The park's stunning scenery might be its greatest asset. Cross the bridge spanning the reservoir for breathtaking views and glimpses of local wildlife. Turtles sun themselves on logs, fish dart beneath the surface, and various waterfowl paddle serenely across the water.
Each season brings its own magic - spring erupts with blossoming trees and flowers, while autumn transforms the landscape into a tapestry of reds, oranges, and golds. If you're timing your visit, note that Silver Lake offers some of the most spectacular sunset views on Staten Island.
Wildlife and Ways to Play
The diverse ecosystem here supports a rich variety of birds that draw wildlife enthusiasts year-round. Keep your eyes peeled for wild turkeys wandering through, or if you're extremely lucky, the bald eagle that's been spotted nesting in the area.
Feel like fishing? Try your hand at catching bass in the lake. For something more relaxed, spread a blanket on one of the many grassy areas for a peaceful picnic. When winter blankets the park in snow, those steep hills become the neighborhood's favorite sledding spots.
Often called the "Central Park of Staten Island," Silver Lake Park offers a peaceful retreat from city life - a place to play, unwind, and reconnect with nature just minutes from urban neighborhoods.
