About the Location
History and Background
Thomas Jefferson Park is a 15.52-acre public park located in the East Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. Situated on First Avenue between 111th and 114th Streets, the park has been serving the community since its opening on October 7, 1905.
Initially designed to provide organized play for the children of "Little Italy," as the area was known at the time, the park has evolved to meet the needs of the diverse local population.

Recreational Facilities
The park features a variety of recreational facilities catering to different age groups and interests. Its layout includes multiple sports areas, playgrounds, and open spaces for community gatherings.
The Thomas Jefferson Play Center, located within the park, consists of a recreation center and a pool complex that was added in 1936 as part of a Works Progress Administration project.

Renovations and Improvements
Thomas Jefferson Park underwent several renovations and additions throughout its history. In 1992, the pool was extensively refurbished, followed by park-wide improvements in 1994.
More recently, in 2017, a skate park was constructed, and the following year saw the reconstruction of the basketball courts. The playground was renovated and expanded in 2021, introducing new accessible multigenerational play areas and rain gardens.

Location Notes
The park's proximity to the FDR Drive means that traffic noise can sometimes be noticeable, particularly during busy periods. However, the park's diverse amenities and well-maintained grounds continue to make it a popular destination for local residents seeking outdoor recreation and relaxation in East Harlem.
