About the Location

A Piece of History in East Harlem

Located on First Avenue between 111th and 114th Streets, Thomas Jefferson Park spans 15.52 acres in Manhattan's East Harlem neighborhood. Since opening its gates on October 7, 1905, this green space has been a cornerstone of community life.

Originally created to give children from what was then called "Little Italy" a place to play, the park has grown and transformed alongside its neighborhood. Today, it's a gathering place for East Harlem - where basketball games, splashing water, and friendly conversations create the soundtrack of daily life.

Places to Play and Stay Active

If you're looking to break a sweat or simply enjoy some outdoor recreation, you'll find several options here. The Thomas Jefferson Play Center houses both a recreation center and a sizeable pool complex (added in 1936 as part of a Works Progress Administration project). Just a heads-up: the pool operates in sessions during summer and can get pretty packed when the temperatures climb.

Sports options abound with baseball fields, basketball courts, handball courts, and a soccer field encircled by a running track. You'll often spot locals getting their morning jog in or running laps after work around the track.

Skateboarders have their own space in the skate park - though it's relatively modest in size and features. For those who prefer a more structured workout, outdoor fitness equipment is available for a gym-style session under the open sky.

Family Fun and Relaxation

Packing a lunch? The park offers several picnic areas with barbecue grills scattered throughout the grounds. These spots fill up quickly on weekends and holidays, so arriving early is your best bet if you're planning an outdoor feast.

Kids will gravitate toward the recently renovated playground with equipment excellent for the under-12 crowd. When summer heat hits, the playground's sprinkler system becomes an instant attraction. Parents appreciate how the playground sits next to the picnic areas, making it easy to keep an eye on the little ones while enjoying lunch.

Dog owners can let their four-legged friends run free in the dog run at the back of the park. It's a decent space, however it could use a water fountain for thirsty pups after a good play session.

Growing and Changing

Over the years, Thomas Jefferson Park has received several facelifts to keep it fresh and functional. The pool underwent major renovations in 1992, with broader park improvements following in 1994.

More recent additions include the skate park built in 2017 and rebuilt basketball courts in 2018. The playground got a complete makeover in 2021, featuring new accessible play areas for all ages and environmentally friendly rain gardens.

Community Heart

The park serves many community functions. All year long, you can find fitness classes, seasonal events, and neighbors enjoying the space together. During summer, the pool provides welcome relief from the heat.

The Rosedale Community Garden on E. 115th Street near Pleasant Avenue extends the park's green footprint. Local schools, including Storefront Academy Harlem, bring students here for outdoor activities and play time.

Good to Know Before You Go

While there's plenty to love about Thomas Jefferson Park, it's worth noting that bathroom access can be limited. The recreation center restrooms are typically only available to members, and the portable toilets on-site get mixed reviews for cleanliness.

Safety-wise, regular police patrols help keep the park secure despite its urban setting. You might notice some traffic noise from the nearby FDR Drive, especially during rush hour, but it rarely detracts from the experience.

These minor considerations aside, Thomas Jefferson Park is a well-used outdoor space where East Harlem residents of all ages come to play, exercise, relax, and connect - offering various activities for different interests.
