About University Woods Park

Natural Features

Positioned in the University Heights neighborhood of the Bronx, University Woods Park (sometimes called Cedar Park) is a little 3.3-acre woodland spot that feels like a secret escape from city life. Perched between Sedgwick and Cedar Avenues, this compact green space provides something increasingly rare in New York City - a genuine touch of nature with a view.

The park's steep terrain might make for a bit of a climb, but it rewards you with views of Upper Manhattan, the Hudson River and the New Jersey Palisades stretching out in the distance. It's one of those spots where you can actually catch your breath (after climbing the hill, that is) and remember that Manhattan is, in fact, an island. The challenging slopes that give us these views do make the park harder to maintain, but - nature is always a bit unruly here.

Historical Significance

Walk through University Woods and you're literally treading on Revolutionary history. During the American Revolution, this wasn't just a pretty lookout - it was strategically crucial for British forces trying to hold onto New York City.

The crest of the ridge - right where you're standing in the park - was once the site of British Fort #8, part of a network of small forts that lined the river. If you look carefully, you can still spot original stone walls used by British troops during the war. Not many city parks can claim to have authentic Revolutionary War artifacts just sitting there among the trees.

Park Features

The park is designed with a two-tiered pathway system and a main stairway that's undergone restoration work over the years. This stairway isn't just decorative - it's a practical connection between Cedar and Sedgwick Avenues, leading upward to the Hall of Fame terrace and Bronx Community College.

You should note that not all areas of the park are open to the public, which makes the accessible portion relatively compact. Established back in 1899, the park falls under the care of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.

Visitor Experience

What makes University Woods special isn't flashy amenities or manicured gardens - it's the quiet. In a city that rarely stops buzzing, this park offers a moment of peace among the trees. The natural setting provides a genuine retreat from urban intensity, making it ideal for those moments when you need to clear your head.

The panoramic views are the real highlight here, offering perspective on the city that surrounds you. That said, be aware that some areas toward the back of the park aren't as well-maintained as they could be.

Maintenance Challenges

Let's be honest - University Woods has had its struggles. From 2003 to 2006, it earned the unfortunate distinction of being named "the city's worst park" by New Yorkers for Parks.

In 2008, the Friends of the Woods organization kicked off a restoration project, backed by a $500,000 grant from then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg. While these efforts have made improvements, the park still faces ongoing challenges with cleanliness and upkeep. Community cleanup initiatives have helped make the pathways safer and more accessible, but this remains a park that shows both the beauty and the challenges of maintaining wild spaces in an urban environment.
