About the Location
A Piece of Syracuse History
Perched at the highest point in Syracuse within the historic Tipperary Hill neighborhood sits Burnet Park - the city's largest green space spanning an impressive 88 acres. Since 1886, when Major John P. Burnet generously donated this land, generations of locals have been enjoying this elevated retreat.
The park's high vantage point is geography that's also a great spot to catch your breath and take in panoramic views of Syracuse. Head to the round-top area or wander near the golf course for some of the best views in town. The sunset views from here are particularly impressive.
Standout Features
If you're a golf enthusiast (or just learning the ropes), the park's nine-hole par-3 golf course is a must-try. Dating back to 1901, it's among the oldest courses in the country.
Keep an eye out for the first hole's unique "shamrock" shaped bunker - supposedly the only one of its kind in the entire United States. The fairways and greens are well-maintained, making this course suitable for beginners.
Animal lovers won't want to miss the Rosamond Gifford Zoo within the park's boundaries. Home to nearly 1,000 animals across 43 acres, the zoo puts conservation front and center.
The twin baby elephants are a popular attraction - you can spot them through indoor viewing areas when the weather turns chilly. While Onondaga County Parks now runs the zoo, it remains an integral part of what makes Burnet Park special.
Get Moving Year-Round
The park transforms with the seasons, but never lacks things to do. Summer brings swimmers to the outdoor 50-meter pool, while sports enthusiasts can choose between softball fields, tennis courts, or basketball hoops.
Two large open fields provide perfect spaces for everything from frisbee games to dog walks or just lounging on a blanket with a good book. If you're looking to stay fit, check out the individual exercise stations dotted across the grounds.
There's even a 50-yard race track with timing equipment if you want to test your speed. When snow blankets Syracuse, the park's hills become a sledder's paradise.
Community Gatherings
Year-round, Burnet Park comes alive with events that bring people together. Seasonal hayrides offer old-fashioned fun, while Big Rig Day lets kids (and kids at heart) explore various vehicles alongside games and crafts.
For the 21+ crowd, Brew at the Zoo has become a summer tradition. You might also stumble upon outdoor painting sessions or educational programs depending on when you visit.
During warmer months, the activity center opens its doors with additional recreational options.
Family-Friendly Spaces
The recently remodeled playground caters to children of all ages. Its proximity to the zoo makes it easy to plan a full day of family fun without changing locations.
When hunger strikes, numerous picnic areas throughout the park offer a place to refuel. The largest section sits near the golf course, where tables with umbrellas provide options for both sun-seekers and shade-lovers alike.
Natural Retreats
Need a moment of peace? The Oak Grove area - an additional plot donated by Major Burnet in 1887 - offers a tranquil picnic ground beneath the canopy of mature oak trees.
This quiet corner of the park offers a retreat from city life, despite being in Syracuse. With its mix of open meadows and wooded sections, the park provides a wonderful backdrop for seasonal strolls, whether you're crunching through autumn leaves or spotting the first blooms of spring.
