About the Location
Greenway Access
Annie L. Jones Park is the starting point for the Annie Jones Greenway, a lovely trail well-suited for walking, biking, or just enjoying a leisurely stroll. The west branch meanders from McCloud Court through the park and across Tarbert Drive, eventually connecting with the east branch just a short distance from SW Cary Parkway.
If you're driving to the greenway, you'll come across convenient trailhead parking available. The newly paved path takes you through some beautiful wooded areas - it's about a 30-40 minute round trip if you're walking at a relaxed pace. The sunset views along the trail are absolutely worth timing your visit for the golden hour.
Sports Facilities
If you're looking to get active, the park offers six lighted tennis courts, one lighted baseball/softball field, and two basketball courts.
The tennis courts have recently been spruced up and are kept in fantastic condition, complete with covered seating for when you need a breather between sets. Fair warning though - these courts are popular hangouts on weekends, so you might want to arrive early to claim your spot.
The baseball and softball fields are well-maintained and clean, making them fantastic for both casual games with friends or more organized team play.
Playground and Recreation
Got kids in tow? The recently updated playground offers plenty of options for both the little ones and older children. There are swings suitable for different ages, and the sandbox with toys is typically a big hit with the younger crowd.
One of the playground's best features is its shady location, making outdoor play comfortable even during those warmer North Carolina days. While it's fantastic for regular family outings, keep in mind that the park isn't huge - it works better for smaller gatherings rather than large-scale events.
Amenities
You'll discover picnic tables dotted across the grounds - perfect spots to enjoy lunch or gather with friends for a casual outdoor meal.
Need a restroom break? Clean facilities are located just past the courts and near the trailhead in the main park area. These recently renovated restrooms are well-maintained and easily accessible.
There's plenty of parking available, although spaces can fill up during softball games and on busy weekend afternoons.
Park Atmosphere
Annie L. Jones Park has a peaceful vibe and is well-maintained. The clean grounds make it a pleasant space for all visitors.
Bring your four-legged friend along! The park is dog-friendly, and you'll often see locals walking their leashed pets along the lakeside trail, taking in the natural surroundings together.
Park History
Ever wonder about the park's name? It honors Annie Lee Jones (1922-1989), who dedicated nearly three decades to serving the Town of Cary from 1954 to 1981 as town clerk, finance director, treasurer, and tax collector.
The park officially received her name in 1979, recognizing her important contributions to the community. For many locals, this park holds special meaning - some families have been enjoying its amenities for over 35 years, making it a true generational gathering place.
