About the Location
A Peek Into the Past
Nestled in Concord, North Carolina, Camp T.N. Spencer Park spans a generous 50 acres of recreational space. The park was established in 2003 through a partnership between Cabarrus County and the Cabarrus Boys and Girls Club.
Before becoming the public park we know today, this place actually served as a private summer camp dating back to the late 1940s. We love that the Boys and Girls Club summer program still runs here each year - a beautiful nod to the park's origins and heritage.
Nature's Canvas
The park features three fishing ponds. The crown jewel among them is Bear Lake, a peaceful 2-acre body of water that sits right beside the rental cabins. Don't expect deep waters here - Bear Lake averages less than five feet in depth and gets an annual stocking of channel catfish.
If fishing's your thing, you'll also find largemouth bass and sunfish swimming about. Just note that there's a small fishing permit fee (around $3.50) if you're planning to cast a line. For those who prefer land activities, a 1.5-mile trail winds around the park's edges, great for soaking in the natural beauty that surrounds you.
Play All Day
The Camp T.N. Spencer Park TRACK Trail offers a wonderful path for a leisurely stroll or light hike. If you'd like to extend your stay, there are eight tent sites with access to restrooms and a bathhouse. For a bit more comfort, there are six rental cabins equipped with mini fridges and microwaves.
During the warmer months (typically Memorial Day through Labor Day), the swimming pool becomes the park's social hub, complemented by a handy concession stand for those mid-swim snack cravings.
You'll also find an outdoor volleyball court for the sportier visitors, a natural playground that's popular with children, and several fire pits fantastic for evening s'mores and storytelling. Throughout the park, rangers keep a watchful eye, maintaining that safe, family-friendly vibe.
Spaces for Every Occasion
Looking to host an event? Propst and Helms Halls make ideal venues for family reunions or larger gatherings. Multiple shelters near the playground can be reserved for everything from casual picnics to birthday celebrations.
The picnic areas come in various sizes to accommodate different needs - grab a small spot for a quick lunch or secure a larger area for that special birthday party. Grills located throughout the park are available for outdoor cooking.
Learning in the Great Outdoors
If you're staying overnight in the cabins or camping, educational programs are offered every Friday and/or Saturday night. These sessions share information about the local environment and other topics of interest.
Take Aim
For something a bit different, check out the park's archery range - a great spot to practice your aim or try your hand at this traditional sport for the first time. It's just one more reason to appreciate the diverse activities this park has to offer.
