About the Location

History and Origins

Set in Concord, North Carolina, Frank Liske Park spans an impressive 238 acres of green space with a fascinating backstory. Before becoming a public park, this land was a working farm for the Stonewall Jackson Training School. The county eventually leased the property and transformed it into the public park we now enjoy. Its namesake, Frank Liske, dedicated 48 years of his life to the training school and played a crucial role in securing this land for public recreation.

Natural Features

At the heart of the park lies a serene 10-acre lake where you can cast a line (fishing license required) or take to the water in rented paddle boats and kayaks. If you prefer to keep your feet on solid ground, you'll appreciate the network of trails winding throughout the property. The nature trail offers a peaceful escape, while the 2-mile perimeter trail encircles the entire park, providing shaded paths excellent for a morning jog or a leisurely afternoon stroll.

The park thoughtfully preserves pieces of its agricultural heritage, including a beautifully refurbished dairy barn and silo. This historic barn has found new life as a community gathering space and can be reserved for everything from weddings to family reunions - a charming blend of history and modern utility.

Recreational Facilities

Whether you're a sports enthusiast or just looking to play, Frank Liske Park offers diverse recreational facilities. The grounds feature soccer fields, softball fields, tennis courts, and volleyball courts scattered throughout the property. Several tennis courts have recently been converted into 12 dedicated pickleball courts, catering to fans of this increasingly popular sport.

For something a bit different, try your hand at the horseshoe pits or navigate the 18-hole disc golf course with its mix of wooded sections and open fairways. Families with children will appreciate the multiple playground areas distributed across the park, many thoughtfully shaded with overhead canopies. The 18-hole miniature golf course provides additional family fun, but you'll need to bring your own putter and ball.

Amenities and Facilities

The park offers various amenities for comfort and convenience. You'll find numerous picnic areas throughout the grounds, including several large picnic shelters that can host up to 100 people and can be reserved for special occasions. Many spots come equipped with tables and grills, excellent for impromptu cookouts or planned gatherings.

Clean restroom facilities are strategically placed throughout the park and kept in excellent condition. There's plenty of parking available, however it can fill up during popular sporting events and busy weekends. The grounds themselves are impeccably maintained by dedicated park staff and rangers who help ensure everyone enjoys their visit.

Programs and Events

Frank Liske Park buzzes with activity year-round. During summer, it transforms into the base for an 8-week summer day camp that welcomes around 650 young campers annually. All year long, you can participate in sports camps, nature classes, and tennis lessons, or attend various community events. The sports facilities regularly host league games and tournaments that bring the community together.

The renovated barn has become a sought-after venue for gatherings, charity functions, and celebrations, while the amphitheater provides an ideal setting for outdoor performances and ceremonies under the North Carolina sky.

Conservation

Beyond recreation, Frank Liske Park functions as a wildlife preserve, balancing human activities with environmental protection. The lake area has become a haven for diverse bird species, creating a paradise for birdwatching enthusiasts. Dog owners will appreciate that the park is dog-friendly, welcoming leashed pets on trails and in open areas. The mix of active recreation spaces and natural areas makes this a popular destination for Cabarrus County residents who enjoy the outdoors.
