About Burch Avenue Park
A Glimpse of Durham History
Tucked away in Durham is Burch Avenue Park, sitting in a neighborhood that's been around since 1902 (at least according to old Sanborn insurance maps). The area likely gets its name from Frank P. Burch, who partnered in a real estate venture started by W.T. Blackwell back in 1887.
Play Paradise Under the Trees
This compact park is completely fenced in and features a colorful playground beneath the canopy of mature trees - meaning you can escape the North Carolina heat even in the middle of summer. Thanks to a 2010 renovation by Kaboom (an organization dedicated to creating play spaces where kids actually live), all the equipment is in great shape.
Planning an event? Make a reservation at this park
Kids between 3-10 will love the main play structure, while the swing set accommodates everyone with both regular swings and bucket seats for the little ones. The park has some unique features - there's a school bus where children can pretend to be drivers, a bouncy horse for aspiring cowboys, and a spinning pole that typically results in laughter.
For the Imaginative Souls
Got a creative kid? They'll gravitate toward the musical instrument walls where they can explore different sounds and rhythms. The stage at the back of the playground is a particular hit - we've seen plenty of impromptu performances and imaginative play happening there.
Picnic Perfect
When hunger strikes, you'll come across several wooden picnic tables in both grown-up and kid-friendly sizes. Planning to stay longer? The grilling areas make this a great spot for a family cookout in a peaceful setting.
Good to Know
Parents will appreciate the gated entrance that keeps little explorers from wandering toward the street - one less thing to worry about while you're there. The mulch ground covering provides some cushioning for inevitable tumbles and falls.
Own a local business? Promote it right here
Just note that you'll need to find street parking in the surrounding neighborhood, and there are no restrooms available at the park. Your four-legged friends are welcome to join the fun as long as they stay on a leash.
