About the Location

Historical Significance

Established in 1785, the park is centered around the Mordecai House, which is the oldest residence in Raleigh still on its original foundation. The house was originally built by Joel Lane for his son Henry and daughter-in-law Polly, and later became the property of Moses Mordecai through marriage.

Park Features

The park spans 3.9 acres and features several historic buildings in addition to the main house. These include the birthplace of Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States, which was moved to the site.

Other notable structures are the Ellen Mordecai Garden, the Badger-Iredell Law Office, Allen Kitchen, and St. Mark's Chapel.

Visitor Experiences

Visitors to Mordecai Historic Park can take guided tours of the Mordecai House to learn about its history and see original furnishings from the 18th and 19th centuries.
