About the Location

A Slice of Nature's Wonder

Located in Akron, Cascade Park sprawls across 526 acres along the Cuyahoga River, where natural beauty meets the echoes of industrial heritage.

The Chuckery Area features a prairie and meadow that host some pretty rare plants. If you're up for a challenge, the 2.4-mile Chuckery Trail loops around the historic Indian Signal Tree and treats you to some gorgeous river views along the way.

Views That'll Take Your Breath Away

At the Overlook Area, you'll find a viewing deck that juts right over the cliff edge. From here, you can gaze down 125 feet to the valley below - it's pretty spectacular.

Locals call this spot the "Grand Canyon of Ohio" for its impressive views. As you take it all in, the gentle sound of flowing water creates a natural soundtrack that just adds to the peaceful vibe.

Trails Worth Exploring

The Schumacher Valley Area, named after the generous couple who donated 171 acres back in 1968, offers some of the park's most untouched scenery with terrain that'll give your hiking boots a proper workout.

Up for a challenge? The 1.2-mile Schumacher Trail delivers a more intense hiking experience. For longer adventures, hop onto the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail which stretches all the way to Cleveland - perfect whether you're on foot or two wheels.

The mix of paved paths and hard-packed gravel means you've got options for however you like to move. Cyclists particularly enjoy the zigzag bridges that help navigate the 5% grade through the park without breaking too much of a sweat.

A Step Back in Time

Walking through Cascade Park is like flipping through pages of Ohio's industrial history book. The well-preserved Ohio & Erie Canal remnants, especially the Cascade Locks built in the 1820s, tell the story of how Akron grew from these watery foundations.

These locks formed an ingenious "staircase" system that helped canal boats tackle the significant elevation changes. You'll come across historical markers throughout that fill in the blanks about how this waterway shaped the region.

The park also housed Ferdinand Schumacher's mills - yes, the same operation that eventually became the Quaker Oats Company. For a deeper dive into local history, the Mustill Store and House stands as a window into the past.

Natural Treasures

The Valley View Area, added in 2016, shows what thoughtful restoration can achieve. This former golf course has been guided back to its natural state, creating a haven for local wildlife and plants.

Keep your eyes peeled for native pawpaw trees bearing Ohio's state fruit - a little Appalachian treasure right in Akron. Depending on when you visit, you might also stumble upon seasonal wildflowers or even some wild blackberry bushes if you're lucky.

Everything You Need

Benches and tables are scattered along the trails for rest stops. There's also a water fountain designed for both human and dog use.

Need a pit stop? Clean restrooms are available in a separate building behind the Mustill Store. Cyclists will find a bike repair stand along the trail - a helpful amenity for those on two wheels.

Community and Conservation

The Summit Metro Parks team brings the park to life during the year with educational programs focusing on local natural history and conservation efforts. These programs help visitors learn more about the park's natural features.

The Mustill Store sometimes hosts special events, so it's worth checking what might be happening during your visit. Photographers will find interesting compositions combining historic structures and natural landscapes throughout the park.
