About the Location

Historic Legacy

Nestled in the heart of Columbus's German Village neighborhood, Schiller Park spans a generous 23.45 acres of green space and recreation areas. Dating back to 1867, it holds the distinction of being Columbus's second oldest park, with only Goodale Park predating it. The park sits comfortably enclosed by Reinhard Avenue, Jaeger Street, East Deshler Avenue, and City Park Avenue.

Before becoming the cherished space we know today, this area was known as Stewart's Grove. After the City of Columbus purchased the land in 1867, it was simply called City Park. The name we recognize today came later, during an 1891 Fourth of July celebration, when a statue of Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller was unveiled. This famous German poet and playwright became the park's namesake when it was officially renamed in 1905.

Park Evolution

The park's history reflects the changing tides of American sentiment. During World War I, a wave of anti-German feeling prompted a temporary rename to Washington Park. But the heart of the community prevailed, and at local residents' request, the Schiller name was eventually restored.

Over the decades, this green space has evolved significantly. What began as a simple plot of land is now a place where Columbus residents come for both quiet moments and community gatherings.

Features and Attractions

Take a stroll through Schiller Park today and you'll find a mix of natural beauty and various amenities. Winding walking paths lead through gardens and open green spaces that are great for picnics or reading.

The park honors its heritage with several standout features, including the original Schiller statue and the charming Umbrella Girl fountain that's become a favorite photo spot. History buffs will appreciate the Huntington Gardens, carefully designed to echo the park's late 1800s appearance. As you explore, you'll likely encounter the park's resident waterfowl at the duck pond and might be surprised by the artistic suspended sculptures that add unexpected visual interest across the grounds.

If you're feeling active, the tennis courts and basketball court offer spaces for friendly competition, while open grassy areas invite impromptu games of frisbee or catch. Families with kids will find the well-maintained playground a real highlight - it's thoughtfully divided into areas for different age groups and securely fenced to keep little adventurers safely contained.

Recreational Opportunities

Dog lovers, you're in luck - Schiller Park is a popular spot for four-legged friends. While your pups need to stay leashed, they'll find plenty to explore throughout the park.

If fishing is more your speed, grab your tackle box and head to the fishing pond for some peaceful angling. The park's network of paths makes for pleasant morning jogs or evening walks, winding you through some of the prettiest sections of the grounds.

When nature calls (the other kind), you'll find public restrooms in the park's recreation center. And around the grounds, picnic tables and benches offer perfect perches to enjoy lunch or simply sit back under the shade of magnificent old trees that have watched over generations of visitors.

Cultural Significance

Summer evenings in Schiller Park bring a special magic, as the Actors' Theatre of Columbus transforms the amphitheater into an open-air stage. Their free Shakespearean plays and other theatrical productions have become a cherished tradition, adding a touch of cultural richness to warm-weather months.

The park's setting in German Village provides an ideal historical frame, with preserved architecture dating back to the mid-1800s creating an atmospheric backdrop. This thoughtful preservation, in place since the 1960s, gives the entire experience a timeless quality.

With its blend of natural spaces, recreational facilities, and cultural offerings, Schiller Park remains an important part of Columbus's identity and community landscape.
