About the Location
Urban Oasis on the Great Miami
Next to the Great Miami River in downtown Dayton, RiverScape MetroPark is the city's 45-acre green heartbeat. Since opening in 2001, this urban retreat has become a popular spot where locals gather and visitors explore.
The park's landscaping features flowering gardens, hanging baskets, and reflecting pools that create a refreshing contrast to the surrounding cityscape. One of our favorite spots? The porch swings overlooking the river - there's something deeply satisfying about gently swinging while watching the water flow by and the Dayton skyline rise in the background.
Trail Connections
If you're into outdoor adventures, RiverScape is your launchpad. It sits at the junction of an impressive 330 miles of paved, off-street trails crisscrossing the Dayton region. Whether you're a serious cyclist or just looking for a casual stroll, these well-maintained paths offer riverfront views while connecting you to the wider city.
Many people use RiverScape as either their starting point for longer journeys or as a welcome rest stop - an ideal place to catch your breath before continuing your exploration.
Seasonal Activities and Amenities
RiverScape really shines with its year-round calendar. Summer brings free concerts that fill warm evenings with music, while kids (and let's be honest, adults too) can cool off in the interactive splash pad fountains. The community festivals that pop up throughout the warmer months give the park an ever-changing energy.
When winter arrives, part of the park transforms into a charming outdoor ice skating rink. There's something magical about gliding across the ice with Dayton's lights twinkling around you. Don't worry about the cold - a heated tent lets you warm up and lace your skates in comfort.
Hungry? The park's snack bar has you covered with affordable treats - ice cream on hot days, warm pretzels with cheese, simple hot dogs, and cold drinks. You can find plenty of tables, chairs, and shaded spots to relax while you refuel and people-watch.
Water Features
You can't miss the Fountains of Light - these impressive 60-foot water displays stand where the Mad and Great Miami Rivers meet. They run hourly between Memorial Day and Labor Day, creating a kind of aquatic performance that's worth timing your visit around.
The river itself offers its own attractions. You can rent kayaks on special occasions or simply find a spot along the bank for some peaceful fishing. The water adds a calming soundtrack to the entire park experience.
Celebrating Innovation
Dayton has an incredible innovation legacy, and RiverScape honors this creative spirit. Wander along the Dayton Inventors River Walk to discover fascinating exhibits about local inventions that changed the world - from the humble cash register to the world-altering airplane.
RiverScape MetroPark is a significant part of downtown Dayton - a place where nature, recreation, and community come together along the riverside.
