About the Location
A Touch of Oklahoma City Heritage
Tucked away at the corner of 36th Street and Portland Avenue in Oklahoma City, Will Rogers Park spans a generous 30 acres of historic greenspace. Dating back to 1912 when city leaders first purchased the land, this park didn't truly begin to take shape until 1932, when City Horticulturist Henry Walter rolled up his sleeves and got to work. As one of Oklahoma City's oldest park properties, it's been attracting visitors with its horticultural displays since the 1930s.
Blooms and Branches
The Charles E. Sparks Color Garden features colorful landscapes with This 1.63-acre space bursts with vibrant annuals and perennials that change with the seasons. Right next door, the 7-acre arboretum is a living museum of trees, housing hundreds of varieties from native Oklahoma species to rare cultivars you won't easily find elsewhere.
Some of the oldest trees in the arboretum were planted by Henry Walter himself back in the 1930s - living giants that have witnessed nearly a century of Oklahoma history.
Desert Meets Depression-Era Architecture
The Ed Lycan Conservatory houses a notable collection of cacti and succulents. Originally built in 1924 and relocated to the park in 1936, this glass structure creates a fantastic environment for these drought-loving plants to thrive.
As you wander through the grounds, you'll notice structures built from native red sandstone scattered throughout. These aren't just any buildings - they're the handiwork of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the 1930s, tangible reminders of America's recovery from the Great Depression.
Small lakes, gentle hills, and winding paths tie everything together, creating a landscape that feels both designed and naturally evolved.
Green Thumbs Welcome
Will Rogers Park also functions as a learning center for garden enthusiasts. The Garden Exhibition Building is the park's main facility, hosting educational programs and classes for curious minds of all ages. Flower shows and sales are also regular occurrences here.
Since 1938, the park has been home to the Oklahoma City Council of Garden Clubs, cementing its status as a cornerstone of the local gardening community.
