About the Location
A Brief History
Found in Bend, Oregon, Al Moody Park spans 16.7 acres of community space with quite the transformation story. Once a city sewage treatment plant (yes, really!), it blossomed into this lovely park back in 2008.
The park honors Al Moody, Bend's first pediatrician and an elected board member when the Bend Park and Recreation District formed in 1974. Today, it combines recreational amenities with natural spaces.
The Wild Side
About 60% of the park retains its natural character, including a fascinating rock ridge cutting right through the middle. This ridge isn't just any ordinary formation - it's protected as an "area of special interest" (ASI) and showcases native juniper, pine, rabbit brush, and alpine currant vegetation.
Keep your eyes peeled for the local wildlife! Quail, yellow marmots (adorably called rockchucks), and squirrels all call this place home. The landscaping features beautiful autumn foliage when the seasons change.
Kid Paradise
Little ones have plenty to explore here. The "tree house" play garden and charming train engine are excellent for preschoolers. Toddlers enjoy climbing on that train, while older kids tend to use the more challenging playground equipment.
There's also a "Wildside" play area - a natural space where kids can let their imaginations run wild. Here, they're encouraged to dig, stack logs, and build whatever structures their creative minds can dream up. It's a refreshing alternative to traditional playground equipment.
Get Moving
The park includes a half-court basketball area for those who want to shoot some hoops. There's also an open field with soft grass during summer - suitable for frisbee, casual soccer, or relaxing with a book.
When you're ready to refuel, head to one of the picnic areas with tables and a shelter that provides much-needed shade during those hot summer afternoons. Planning an event? You can actually reserve the shelter.
The well-maintained paved walkways and soft surface fitness trail make for pleasant strolls or more vigorous exercise. Many locals make their daily walks here part of their routine. And when winter blankets Bend with snow, a designated sledding area with gentle slopes becomes a hit with younger children.
Garden Gems & Trails
Along the main trail, you'll come across a delightful butterfly garden created by the "Roots and Shoots" organization. They've thoughtfully used native shrubs and perennials to attract local butterflies and other pollinators.
There's also an evolving "Art Discovery Trail" in the works, thanks to Ensworth Elementary School, the park's "Adopt-a-Park" partner. The trail aims to spark creative thinking and movement - something to look forward to on future visits.
The Little Details
Dog parents will appreciate the trash bins with dog waste bags stationed throughout the park. It's a popular spot for dog walking, and thankfully, it usually doesn't feel overcrowded.
RC car enthusiasts have their own little corner of paradise here too - a dirt track with jumps near the play area, ideal for fast off-road vehicles. If crawler rigs are more your style, check out the hills behind the park.
Occasionally, Bend Park and Recreation District hosts special events here, adding extra life to this community park. The park welcomes visitors daily from 5AM to 10PM.
