About Al Moody Park in Bend
Al Moody Park is a 16.7-acre community park located in Bend, Oregon. The park was developed in 2008 on the site of a former city sewage treatment plant and is named after Al Moody, the first pediatrician in Bend and an elected board member when the Bend Park and Recreation District was formed in 1974.
The park features a mix of developed recreational areas and preserved natural spaces. Approximately 60% of the park maintains its natural character, including a rock ridge that bisects the park. This ridge is protected as an "area of special interest" (ASI) and retains native juniper, pine, rabbit brush, and alpine currant vegetation, providing habitat for wildlife such as quail, yellow marmots (rockchucks), and squirrels.
For children, Al Moody Park offers a "tree house" play garden and a train engine designed for pre-school age children. The park also includes a half-court basketball area for sports enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy picnic areas with tables and a shelter, which can be reserved for gatherings and events.
The park features paved walkways and a soft surface fitness trail for those looking to exercise or take a leisurely stroll. During winter, a designated sledding area provides seasonal recreation. The "Roots and Shoots" organization has contributed a butterfly garden along the primary trail, utilizing native shrubs and perennials to attract local wildlife.
Ensworth Elementary School, which serves as the park's "Adopt-a-Park" partner, is working on an "Art Discovery Trail" designed to stimulate creative thinking and movement among visitors. The park also includes a "Wildside" play area, which is a designated natural space for free-form play where children are encouraged to engage in creative activities like digging, stacking logs, and building structures.
Al Moody Park is open daily from 5 am to 10 pm, providing ample opportunity for community members to enjoy its diverse offerings throughout the year.
