About the Location
River's Edge Retreat
Right next to the western edge of the Deschutes River in Bend, Columbia Park unfolds across two distinct levels, each offering its own unique vibe and perspective of this beautiful Oregon landscape.
The upper shelf gives you a sprawling grassy lawn that's ideal for throwing down a blanket and enjoying a lazy afternoon picnic. When there's no organized activity happening, it's a great open space for tossing a frisbee, kicking a soccer ball, or letting your four-legged friend burn off some energy.
Playground Paradise
Kids often enjoy the playground here, which features the SS Columbia ship structure. Locals affectionately call this the "Pirate Ship Park", and it's not hard to see why it's such a hit with the little ones.
Beyond the ship, you can find swings for both bigger kids and toddlers. A highlight is the large tube slide built right into the hillside. Starting at park level and winding down with two turns before depositing riders onto the riverside path below, this slide is a popular feature.
Picnic and Relaxation Areas
When hunger strikes, you've got options. There's a covered pavilion with tables set on concrete that's wheelchair accessible. Within the park, you'll discover additional tables - some perched on the hilltop with lovely river views, others conveniently placed near the playground for keeping an eye on the kids.
On those hot summer days, the shaded areas become prime real estate for a break from the sun. And yes, there's a drinking fountain when you need to hydrate.
Riverside Trail Access
The lower level of Columbia Park hosts a trail running north and south along the river's edge. It connects to a pedestrian bridge spanning the Deschutes, making it easy to wander over to downtown Bend or the Old Mill District if you're in the mood to explore.
You can find benches strategically placed along this section where you can sit and take in the peaceful river scenes. Just note that for safety reasons, there's a chain link fence along this area, and the steep drop means you can't directly access the river from here.
Amenities and Facilities
When nature calls, portable restrooms are typically available near the riverside pathway. The park welcomes dogs, though they should stay leashed as per local rules.
Feeling competitive? Try your hand at the horseshoe pit - just remember to bring your own horseshoes if you want to play.
Historical Significance
What makes Columbia Park even more interesting is its past life as a quarry during the mill days. In 1984, it transitioned from City of Bend ownership to the Bend Park & Recreation District.
Its development benefited from Land and Water Conservation grants in the late '60s and early '70s. More recently, the park got some love through Oregon State Marine Board grants in 2022 and a Future Fund Grant in 2023.
While Columbia Park may be relatively small at 2.0 acres, its riverside location and thoughtful features make it a cherished spot for locals and visitors alike. You can find street parking nearby, but it might require a bit of patience during busy times.
