About North Shore Riverfront Park in Pittsburgh
North Shore Riverfront Park is a municipal park located along the northern banks of the Allegheny and Ohio Rivers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Spanning approximately 11.25 acres, the park offers a blend of green spaces and public areas, providing residents and visitors with a scenic outdoor destination.
The park was established in 2001 as part of a larger urban development project that included the construction of nearby sports stadiums. It stretches for about one mile between the Kamin Science Center and the Three Sisters bridges, offering unobstructed views of Pittsburgh's cityscape.
North Shore Riverfront Park features a multi-level design. At the river's edge, there is a riverwall and riverwalk that create a trail along the water. The second level includes large open spaces of grass and native landscaping, with paths running southwest to mimic the river's flow. The largest of these areas, known as the Great Lawn, covers approximately three acres and is suitable for picnicking and informal recreation.
The park incorporates various architectural elements to enhance its functionality and appeal. A broad walkway called the esplanade runs along the top level, varying in width from sixteen to forty feet. The park also includes features such as the Water Steps, an interactive fountain that has become a popular attraction, and the Market Street Pier.
North Shore Riverfront Park serves as more than just a recreational space. It is home to three memorials honoring American heroes: the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. These monuments add historical and cultural significance to the park.
The park's location between PNC Park and Heinz Field makes it a hub of activity, especially during sports events. It provides boat tie-ups along the riverfront, encouraging water recreation and offering a unique vantage point for watching river traffic.
Maintenance of the park is a collaborative effort involving multiple organizations, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Steelers, the City of Pittsburgh's public works department, and the Sports & Exhibition Authority of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County.
