About the Location
Tennis and Pickleball Facilities
The centerpiece of Southeast Park is its extensive tennis facility. As the city's largest public outdoor tennis center, it offers multiple courts for players of various skill levels.
The courts are thoughtfully designed, taking advantage of the natural shade provided by the surrounding trees. The facility includes both clay and hard courts, with lighting available in the evening that allows children to practice and adults to play after work hours.
In addition to tennis, the park has become a popular destination for pickleball enthusiasts, with four dedicated courts available. The pickleball community is active, with organized events including a ladies' night on Thursdays.
Landscape and Nature
Southeast Park is a 62-acre public park and one of the city's newest and largest outdoor recreational facilities. The park features a diverse landscape, with thousands of trees providing ample shade throughout the grounds.
There is also a pond on the property, home to various wildlife including turtles, ducks, and fish. Visitors often enjoy watching the turtles bobbing their heads out of the water or observing the resident black and white ducks.
The pond is surrounded by a combination of paved and dirt paths that form a loop for walking or jogging. A small waterfall adds to the serene atmosphere of this area.
Walking Trails
The park includes walking trails that wind through wooded areas, offering opportunities for exercise and nature observation. The trail system features both paved cement walkways and more natural wooded paths.
The maximum trail length is just under two miles, making it ideal for a relaxing stroll or a short jog. Most paths benefit from good tree cover, providing welcome shade on hot days.
Recreation Areas
For families and groups, Southeast Park features picnic areas scattered throughout the grounds, with many taking advantage of the natural tree shade. The open fields are suitable for various recreational activities.
The park is home to a popular disc golf course that winds throughout the property. The course is particularly challenging and well-designed, with optional holes to accommodate newer players, though it's generally recommended for experienced amateurs rather than beginners.
Fishing is permitted in the pond (though not from the dock), providing another recreational option for visitors. The park's layout and amenities make it a versatile space for both active sports and passive enjoyment of the outdoors.
Amenities
The park offers clean restroom facilities that are air-conditioned and well-maintained. A ranger station is typically staffed during park hours, providing assistance to visitors as needed.
Southeast Park is dog-friendly, with numerous paths ideal for walking pets. Dogs must be kept on leashes at all times, and waste disposal bags are provided by the park.
Location
The park's location, approximately two miles east of I-77, makes it easily reachable for residents and visitors to Columbia. Its peaceful setting provides a natural retreat despite its proximity to urban areas.
