Southeast Park
About Southeast Park
Swing a Racket or Just Take a Stroll
Southeast Park's crown jewel is its impressive tennis facility - the largest public outdoor tennis center in the city. If you're channeling your inner Serena Williams or just hitting for fun, there's a court for every skill level here.
We love how the courts are nestled among trees that provide natural shade during those scorching South Carolina afternoons. With both clay and hard courts available, and lights that stay on into the evening, you can squeeze in a match even after a long workday.
The park has also embraced the pickleball craze, with four dedicated courts that have created quite a community. If you're a lady looking to join the fun, check out the Thursday night gatherings that have become a local tradition.
A Natural Oasis
Spread across 62 acres, Southeast Park is one of Columbia's newest and most spacious outdoor areas. Thousands of trees dot the landscape, offering welcome relief from the southern sun.
The pond is a little ecosystem unto itself, home to turtles popping their heads above the water's surface, black and white ducks paddling about, and fish swimming below. A network of paved and dirt paths circles the water, meant for a contemplative walk. The small waterfall adds a gentle soundtrack to your visit - just the thing to wash away the stress of city life.
Trails for Every Pace
Winding through the park are trails that cater to both the serious jogger and the casual wanderer. You'll come across paved cement walkways for a smoother journey, as well as more rustic wooded paths that bring you closer to nature.
Need to stretch your legs but short on time? The trails max out at just under two miles, excellent for a quick fitness session or a leisurely amble. Most paths are blessed with generous tree cover, making even midday walks bearable during those humid summer months.
Something for Everyone
If gathering with friends or family is on your agenda, you'll appreciate the picnic areas scattered around the park, many thoughtfully positioned under shade trees. Open fields provide space for impromptu games of frisbee or catch.
Disc golf enthusiasts will find a challenging course that weaves through the property. It's particularly well-designed, with alternative holes for those still developing their skills - though it's generally better suited for players who've mastered the basics rather than complete newcomers.
Fancy a bit of fishing? Cast your line into the pond (just not from the dock) and see what bites. The park offers a mix of sports facilities, trails, and quiet spaces.
The Little Things That Matter
Practical amenities include clean, air-conditioned restrooms - a small but significant comfort during outdoor adventures. The ranger station is typically staffed while the park is open, providing information or assistance when needed.
Bring your four-legged friends along! Southeast Park is dog-friendly with plenty of paths great for walks. Just remember to keep them leashed and use the provided waste bags to keep the park pleasant for everyone.
Getting There
Just about two miles east of I-77, Southeast Park is easily accessible yet feels worlds away from Columbia's urban bustle. It's that rare place that offers a genuine nature retreat without requiring a long drive to reach it.
