About the Location
Sporting Facilities
Spanning about 37 acres, Caswell Park has become something of a sports hub for Knoxville locals. The main attraction is the softball complex with its four large softball fields that light up for evening games. With 300-foot, 12-foot high outfield fences, these fields aren't messing around when it comes to serious play.
Many players find the softball setup quite good, thanks to the maintenance team who keep the fields in good condition. Just a heads-up though - those sliding surfaces can be a bit rough on the skin if you're diving for bases.
Need to park? No problem. With over 500 spaces including 25 accessible spots, you won't be circling around looking for parking even during big tournaments. This ample parking makes the park popular for softball competitions throughout the season.
Park Features
The park blends nicely with the neighborhood around it. The Sam Anderson Pavilion complements the Victorian homes nearby.
You can find a wrap-around porch with rocking chairs where you can relax and watch the games. There's also a covered picnic area with plenty of tables - good for team gatherings or family outings.
Beyond organized sports, there are open grassy areas where you can toss a frisbee or just lounge around. If you're planning to make a day of it, the grilling areas come in handy for a proper cookout. And for those who don't want to skip leg day, check out the fitness equipment area with various workout stations.
Playground
The Ashley Nicole Dream Playground is fully accessible and welcomes children of all abilities. This inclusive approach allows all children to participate.
It's an extensive play area with different structures suited to various age groups. The ground is covered with a soft, foam-like surface that's gentle on falls. Kids can choose between swings, slides, climbing structures, and interactive elements that keep the fun going for hours.
A helpful feature of the playground is its layout - you can see your kids from most vantage points, unlike some maze-like playgrounds. If you've got children of different ages, you'll appreciate how the multiple play zones let everyone find their happy place.
Accessibility and Inclusion
Caswell Park takes accessibility seriously. Wheelchair access extends throughout the facilities, and the playground equipment is thoughtfully designed for inclusive play. It's the kind of place where everyone gets to join in the fun.
Yes, there are restrooms available, however they might not always be spotless depending on when you visit. The park welcomes visitors daily from 8AM to 9PM, giving you plenty of time to enjoy all it has to offer.
Connectivity
The lower First Creek Greenway runs right through the park, connecting it to the broader area. This makes it easy to extend your visit with a walk or bike ride beyond the park boundaries. You'll often spot locals using the walking path for their daily exercise or casual strolls.
The park sits conveniently next to the John T. O'Connor Senior Center and the Cansler Family YMCA, creating a kind of recreational campus for the community. And in a nod to modern needs, there are even EV charging stations available if your electric vehicle needs a boost while you play.
