About the Location

Historic Origins

Circle Park is a small public park located on the University of Tennessee campus in Knoxville, Tennessee. Situated behind the iconic Volunteer Statue, also known as the Torchbearer, the park serves as a central gathering place for students, faculty, and visitors.

Originally named Payne Circle, the park dates back to the late 19th century when it was part of a fashionable residential neighborhood. In the early 20th century, Circle Park became a popular destination for picnics and baseball games, accessible by streetcar.

Campus Integration

As the University of Tennessee expanded westward in the late 1960s, the surrounding Victorian houses were removed, leaving Circle Park as a green space within the campus.

Today, Circle Park hosts various social events and provides a pleasant outdoor area for students to relax, study, and interact. The park features brick walkways, benches, and well-maintained green spaces.

Campus Life

The park is particularly lively during football game days, when it transforms into a popular tailgating spot for Volunteers fans.

The park underwent renovations in 2004, which included the addition of new lighting and improved pathways. Further upgrades were made in 2015 to enhance the park's functionality and aesthetic appeal.
