About the Location
Natural Setting
Positioned in South Knoxville, Tennessee, I.C. King Park spans 230 acres of refreshing natural landscape. This park sits right along the Tennessee River, specifically next to the Knob Creek inlet.
With its mix of forested hills and peaceful shoreline, you'll come across plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors here. The park has plenty of wildlife, making it a good spot to reconnect with nature and maybe snap some photos.
Trail System
Looking for a good trek? The park offers over 8 miles of natural surface trails winding through dense woods. Whether you're into hiking, trail running, or mountain biking, there are trails ranging from leisurely strolls to more challenging routes.
You can choose between peaceful shoreline paths or more elevated trails that reward you with different perspectives. Mountain bikers can get their heart pumping with approximately 800 feet of elevation gain across three separate ridges. A big plus: most trails are shaded, which is a lifesaver during those hot Tennessee summers.
While the trails themselves are well-maintained, the signage can be a bit confusing and doesn't always match up with park maps. If you're new to the area, using a hiking app might save you from some unexpected detours.
Recent Improvements
I.C. King Park has gotten quite a facelift recently. In 2019, a new entrance opened at 2625 Maryville Pike, bringing with it several welcome additions.
The improvements include more parking (always appreciated!), modern restrooms, and a picnic pavilion. These new features connect seamlessly to the original park through the trail system.
Amenities
Comfort matters when you're spending a day outdoors. The main entrance area offers clean, flush toilets - no primitive facilities here. Between the restrooms and playground, you'll discover a large covered picnic pavilion with about six tables, well-suited for a family lunch or small gathering.
Kids can burn off energy at the playground near the picnic area, while adults can keep an eye on them from nearby seating. Though not massive, the playground is well-kept and just right for younger adventurers.
Water Access
If water activities are more your style, the park provides access to both Knob Creek and the Tennessee River. Fishing enthusiasts can cast a line from the fishing pier for panfish and catfish, while paddlers can easily launch kayaks and canoes for some peaceful water exploration.
Dog Park
One of the real highlights here is the PetSafe dog park with thoughtfully separate areas for large and small dogs. The larger dog section extends about 30% into the woods and features secure, tall fencing.
The dog park is clean, roomy, and a favorite among local dog owners. Just a heads-up: ticks can be an issue, especially during summer and in wooded areas, so make sure your furry friend has preventative treatment.
Historical Significance
Ever wonder about the name? I.C. King Park honors Inslee Columbus King, a notable local businessman and politician from the early 20th century. Today, the park is a popular outdoor destination in the Knoxville area for hikers, cyclists, paddlers, and nature enthusiasts.
