About the Location
Natural Landscape
Spread across 10 acres along W. Green Oaks Blvd., Thora Hart Park strikes a nice balance between untouched nature and thoughtful design. It's not huge, but it offers plenty of breathing room for both locals and visitors passing through Arlington.
You'll notice the flower beds accented with retaining walls and decorative boulders that give the park a bit of character. Concrete paths meander throughout, great for a leisurely wander while taking in the surroundings.
If you venture behind the playground, you'll discover a wooded section with trails cutting through the natural growth. A sweet surprise awaits during summer (mid-June to early July) when wild blackberries and grapes ripen along these paths - nature's little treats for the observant walker.
Amenities
Need a moment to sit and reflect? Benches are scattered throughout the grounds, offering quiet spots to pause. For those planning to spend more time, picnic tables (most with grills attached) await at the end of the sidewalk beside the open field.
There's a water fountain available when you need to hydrate, but you should note there aren't any restrooms on-site. Dog parents will appreciate the dog waste bags stationed around the park - a thoughtful touch for keeping the grounds clean.
Playground
The playground is definitely a highlight, having opened in spring 2019. With a soft wood chip surface underfoot, it features two main structures thoughtfully designed for different age groups - a gentler area for toddlers and younger children, and a more challenging setup for the 5-12 crowd.
Kids particularly enjoy the swing set with its two swings and the various slides, including an exciting twisty slide on the larger structure. The drawbridge feature is another favorite that keeps little ones engaged. It's a well-designed space that accommodates children at different developmental stages.
Recreation
If you're looking for some light exercise, the park offers a bike and hike trail stretching 0.11 miles. While the main path is paved for easy access, additional trails wind through the wooded section for those seeking a slightly more rugged experience.
The spacious open field gives you plenty of room to run around, play catch, or just spread out a blanket and enjoy being outdoors. Despite its modest size, this little park manages to pack in a surprising variety of experiences for the Arlington community.
