About the Location

History and Legacy

Located along the south bank of the Colorado River in southeast Austin, this sprawling 363-acre park has quite the backstory. Formerly known simply as Colorado River Park, it was renamed in 2001 to honor Roy G. Guerrero, a true local hero who worked with Austin Parks and Recreation. Guerrero wasn't just any park official - he broke barriers by integrating Little League baseball games and stood up as a passionate advocate for Latino citizens.

Natural Landscapes

There's something magical about the diverse landscape here. From open grassy lawns to dense wooded areas, the trails that meander toward the Colorado River offer a great escape from city life without actually leaving town.

If you're into birdwatching, you're in for a treat. The park's riverside location makes it a good place for spotting birds - you might see Red-Tail and Red-Shouldered Hawks, Belted and Ringed Kingfishers, occasional Bald Eagles, and Great Blue Herons.

Even on those scorching Texas summer days, the mature forest provides generous shade throughout much of the park. And if you're lucky (especially during quieter hours), you might catch glimpses of deer quietly making their way through the woods.

Playground and Family Areas

The park has a lot to offer for children. The large, fenced playground area features two distinct structures - a smaller one suitable for toddlers and younger children, and a more challenging setup for older kids. Both areas are thoughtfully gated, giving parents some peace of mind while supervising.

The playground includes slides, swings, playscapes, climbing walls, and faux rocks - plenty of options for active play. There's also a covered pavilion with multiple picnic tables nearby that you can rent for birthday celebrations or family get-togethers.

Recreational Facilities

The disc golf course here has earned quite a reputation among enthusiasts. Winding through beautiful forested areas, it offers a technical challenge with many shots threading between trees and holes varying nicely in length. Recently redesigned for better flow, it still maintains the complexity that keeps experienced players coming back.

Beyond disc golf, the park features baseball fields, soccer fields, and a basketball court - truly something for every sports lover.

River Access and Trails

The park features "Secret Beach" - a small sandy area along the Colorado River. While not deep enough for proper swimming, it's well-suited for wading or taking a refreshing riverbank stroll. Some folks enjoy fishing here, often pausing to appreciate Austin's downtown skyline creating a beautiful backdrop in the distance.

The park's network of trails includes paved paths ideal for biking, walking, or pushing strollers. These trails offer that rare opportunity to immerse yourself in nature while technically still being in the city.

Conservation Efforts

The park has a remarkable environmental comeback story. Local non-profit Ecology Action has transformed parts of the park - particularly the Circle Acres Nature Preserve area - from a former landfill and illegal dumping ground into a thriving ecosystem.

Their dedicated work has included removing literal tons of garbage, introducing native plant species, and creating accessible hiking trails.

Historic Features

Adding a touch of Austin heritage to your outdoor adventure, the park contains a trail connecting to the Historic Montopolis Bridge. This connection makes Roy G. Guerrero Park a place to play and relax that's also a living link to Austin's rich past.
