About West End Square in Dallas
West End Square is a 0.78-acre urban park located in the heart of Dallas' West End Historic District. Opened to the public in March 2021, it was designed by James Corner Field Operations in collaboration with Parks for Downtown Dallas and the City of Dallas Park and Recreation Department.
The park was developed on the site of a former surface parking lot, transforming it into a much-needed neighborhood green space for the area's growing population. West End Square's design balances historical elements with modern innovation, serving as both a community gathering place and a testing ground for incorporating technology into public spaces.
The park's layout features two distinct environments. The first is "The Frame," a U-shaped steel canopy structure that wraps around three sides of the park. This structure acts as a flexible armature for various technological integrations, allowing for adaptability as the park's needs evolve over time. The Frame includes features such as smart sensor lighting, fans, and power outlets to support diverse programming and events.
The second key element is the Prairie Gardens, which occupy the interior of the square. These gardens feature organically-shaped planting beds inspired by the Texas Blackland Prairies, providing a natural oasis within the urban setting. The plant palette includes native and adaptive species that require minimal watering, supporting the park's sustainability goals.
West End Square incorporates various sustainable elements, including a smart irrigation system that can self-regulate based on weather conditions. The park also utilizes eco-smart LED lighting technology that adjusts light levels based on usage and time of day, enhancing energy efficiency while ensuring visitor safety.
Since its opening, West End Square has become a central point for community engagement, hosting a variety of events such as dance classes, art installations, and local vendor markets. The park serves as a model for innovative urban green spaces, demonstrating how technology and nature can be integrated to create vibrant public areas in dense city environments.
