A Natural Oasis in the City

White Rock Lake Park is a 1,015-acre urban oasis located approximately 5 miles northeast of downtown Dallas, Texas. Centered around White Rock Lake, the park offers a diverse range of outdoor activities and natural experiences within the city limits.

The lake itself, created in 1911 as a water source for Dallas, spans 1,254 acres and is a focal point for recreation. Often called "the jewel of the Dallas park system," this beloved park attracts residents and visitors alike.

Trails and Recreation

A 9.33-mile hike and bike trail encircles the lake, providing opportunities for walking, jogging, cycling, and inline skating. The paved trail offers scenic views of the water and surrounding landscape.

Water activities are a major draw at White Rock Lake. While swimming is prohibited, the lake supports non-motorized boating such as kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding. Sailing is also permitted, and there are designated fishing areas around the lake.

Wildlife and Natural Habitats

White Rock Lake Park is known for its rich biodiversity. The park is home to various ecosystems, including wetlands and remnants of the native Blackland Prairie.

Visitors can observe a wide array of wildlife, with over 217 species of birds recorded in the area, making it a popular spot for birdwatching. The park also harbors numerous mammal, reptile, and amphibian species.

The park features several cultural and educational facilities. The Bath House Cultural Center, located on the eastern shore, hosts art exhibitions and performances.

The White Rock Lake Museum, situated within the Filter Building, offers insights into the lake's history and ecology. Throughout the year, the park serves as a venue for numerous community events and activities, including festivals, races, and outdoor concerts.
