About the Location
A Piece of Fort Worth History
Nestled in southwest Fort Worth, Overton Park stretches like a green ribbon through the urban landscape. Once part of the historic Edwards Ranch, this linear park came to life in 1959 when the Cassco Land Company gifted about 12 acres to the city. What started as a modest patch of green has grown over the decades to encompass 49 acres of natural space.
Nature's Corridor
Overton Park creates a verdant connection between the Tanglewood and Overton Park neighborhoods to the north and Foster Park to the south. Following the gentle curve of the Clear Fork of the Trinity River, this narrow greenbelt (varying between 100-150 feet wide) extends for about a mile, offering a refreshing dose of nature amid city life. Keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife - the resident hawks soaring overhead are a common and majestic sight.
Get Moving Outdoors
Whether you're a dedicated jogger or just looking for a pleasant stroll, Overton Park has plenty of options. Sidewalks run the entire length on both sides, excellent for a morning run or afternoon walk. The trails received a significant upgrade in 2008, enhancing the overall experience for all visitors.
The park's abundant trees cast welcome shade along the pathways - a blessing during those hot Texas summers. Open green spaces throughout invite you to spread out a blanket for a picnic, toss a frisbee, or simply lie back and watch the clouds drift by.
Kid-Friendly Fun
The recently updated playground sits near one of the park entrances and offers entertainment for children of various ages. While the jungle gym has minimal overhead covering (providing some shade in the early morning), it's packed with opportunities for climbing, sliding, and imaginary adventures. Parents can keep watch from nearby benches, and several picnic tables make this spot great for family lunches or afternoon snacks.
Good to Know
Four-legged friends are welcome at Overton Park, and you'll likely spot plenty of dogs enjoying walks with their owners. Just remember to bring your own waste bags, as pick-up stations might not be available within the park.
Note that there are no public restrooms in the park, so plan accordingly if you're intending a longer visit. Open 24 hours daily, the park typically maintains a peaceful atmosphere - rarely overcrowded and offering a calm retreat from city life.
Looking Forward
The city continues to invest in this popular green space. The 2022 Bond Program earmarked funds specifically for streambank stabilization within the park, addressing erosion issues and helping to preserve the environmental health of this urban oasis for future generations of Fort Worth residents.
