About the Location
Where Houston Began
Set in downtown Houston where Buffalo Bayou meets White Oak Bayou sits Allen's Landing Park - a modest 1.76-acre patch of green with an outsized historical significance. This unassuming spot marks where Augustus and John Allen first stepped ashore in 1836 and thought this would be a good place to build a city.
This is literally where Houston was born. By 1841, the area had become the city's official port, transforming from wilderness into a bustling commercial hub as wharves sprang up and merchants moved in.
A Park's Journey
Allen's Landing has had its ups and downs over the years. In 1967, the Southern Pacific Railroad donated a small 4,000-square-foot parcel to create a historical park commemorating the site.
But Mother Nature had other plans. After flooding in the 1970s left the park worse for wear, it took until 1999 for a proper revival to take place. Landscape architect Kevin Shanley and SWA Group led the charge, breathing new life into this historic space.
What You'll Find Today
Today's Allen's Landing features terraced green spaces that step down from street level to the bayou, giving you a chance to get closer to the water that made Houston possible. The entry plaza offers some seriously impressive views of the surrounding area.
Follow the curved walkways and you'll reach an embarcadero (fancy word for a waterfront promenade) complete with bollards, benches, and concrete paving inscribed with historical tidbits. You can capture interesting angles of the Houston skyline alongside glimpses of Buffalo Bayou's more natural elements.
On the Water
Feel like getting on the bayou? Allen's Landing functions as a popular kayak launch point for paddlers looking to explore Houston from a different perspective. Gliding along the water offers a different perspective with skyscrapers towering above.
The park also hosts water events during the year, including the annual Buffalo Bayou Regatta - a kayak and canoe race that draws participants from across the region. If paddling yourself sounds like too much work, hop aboard one of the boat tours run by the Buffalo Bayou Partnership that depart from here, offering fascinating insights into how Houston evolved from this very spot.
Beyond the Park
Allen's Landing isn't an island - it's connected to the larger Buffalo Bayou Park system, linking you to miles of hike and bike trails that wind through downtown Houston. The trails connect to the broader downtown area for jogging, cycling, or leisurely strolls.
Taking It All In
Despite being surrounded by downtown's hustle, there's a certain tranquility here that makes it meant for a moment of reflection. Bring your leashed four-legged friend if you like - the park is dog-friendly.
As you wander around, you'll notice various markers and displays that tell the story of Houston's beginnings. The historical markers let you experience the beginnings of Houston while standing at the very spot where it all began.
