About the Location
Park Features
Nestled at the intersection of 1300 South and 700 East, Herman L. Franks Park spans 10 peaceful acres in the heart of Salt Lake City. This green oasis is a community gathering spot where locals come to play, relax, and connect with nature.
The park honors Herman L. Franks, a Salt Lake City native who made his mark in baseball history as both a player and manager.
Sports Facilities
True to its namesake's legacy, the park features several baseball diamonds that host everything from kids' T-ball to adult league games. Many consider these fields among the best in the valley - and who wouldn't appreciate those thoughtfully placed shaded seating areas when you're cheering on your favorite players?
During baseball season, you can grab a snack at the snack shack to keep your energy up while watching the action unfold on the diamond.
Dog-Friendly Area
A popular feature of the park is the off-leash dog park. This fenced area is popular with local dogs and their owners. The space includes both gravel sections (which help prevent mud puddles after rainstorms) and grassy areas where your dog can run around freely.
You'll discover benches scattered throughout, positioned in both sunny and shaded spots so you can choose your perfect perch while watching your dog make new friends. During summer, there's even a dedicated water fountain for thirsty pups, and the park keeps free waste bags on hand to make cleanup a breeze. Some dogs even get to show off their skills on the agility training equipment that's available.
Amenities
The humans haven't been forgotten! Just outside the eastern fence of the dog park sits a small playground where kids can climb, slide, and swing to their heart's content. The park also offers plenty of open grassy spaces excellent for spreading out a picnic blanket, tossing a frisbee, or simply lounging with a good book.
Mature trees provide welcome shade across the grounds - a blessing during those hot Utah summer days. Restroom facilities are available, however keep in mind they typically close during the winter months. There's also a decent-sized parking lot that offers plenty of space (except when the baseball diamonds are hosting games).
Accessibility
The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 9PM. Its location in a residential neighborhood makes it an easy walking destination for many locals.
As a bonus, the much larger Liberty Park sits just kitty-corner from Herman L. Franks, creating a substantial green zone in this part of Salt Lake City. If you're looking to play ball, exercise your dog, or simply enjoy some fresh air, this unassuming neighborhood park offers a little something for everyone.
