About the Location
Park Overview
Popperton Park spans over 5 acres and offers a variety of recreational facilities for visitors. It is situated in the upper Avenues area of Salt Lake City, providing easy access to many Foothills trails including Dry Creek Canyon and the eastern Avenues neighborhood.
The park features both developed and wild areas. The developed section includes a grass area with athletic fields and a playground, while the wild hiking area offers natural landscapes and trail access.
Mountain Biking
A small mountain bike area within the park provides 0.9 miles of beginner-friendly trails in a loop configuration. This makes it an excellent choice for children and first-time mountain bikers.
Upcoming Improvements
Popperton Park is currently undergoing upgrades, with construction expected to be completed in spring 2025. The improvements include the addition of new parking spaces, a welcome plaza with a trailhead information kiosk, and enhanced facilities.
New amenities will include a precast concrete plumbed restroom with two toilets and a water fountain.
Trail Connections
The park serves as a trailhead for the Bonneville Shoreline Trail (BST), with a paved connector trail leading to the BST at the bottom of Dry Gulch. This connection, combined with 11th Avenue, creates a popular road return route for those riding the City Creek and Avenues sections of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail.
Additional Features
Popperton Park also houses the Popperton Plots Community Garden and includes space for its potential expansion. The park's location offers views of the surrounding area, including Shriner's Hospital and the University of Utah Medical Center.
