What's Here Now

Found in Alexandria's West End, Ewald Park spans a modest 3.88 acres along Duke Street. It's a simple green retreat that locals have come to appreciate, even if it doesn't boast the bells and whistles of larger parks.

The current setup includes a lighted basketball court where you can shoot hoops well into the evening, a playground for the little ones, and a parking lot that makes access convenient. There's also a generous open grass area that's become an unofficial soccer spot - you'll often find impromptu games happening here, however it's not designated for organized sports.

What's Coming Next

Let's be honest - Ewald Park has been flying under the radar and could use some love. The good news? Change is on the horizon. Back in 2015, Alexandria approved recommendations to breathe new life into this underutilized space.

The vision includes giving the playground a fresh look and a new location within the park. Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the addition of parkour equipment, offering a different way to work out in the fresh air. They're also tackling practical matters with plans for better stormwater management.

Staying Safe

The park's hilly layout creates some secluded spots that aren't visible from Duke Street, which has raised some safety concerns. To address this, the improvement plans include enhanced lighting throughout the pathways and activity areas. Better illumination means better visibility - making the park feel more welcoming for everyone at all hours.

When Will This Happen?

The wheels are in motion, but park transformations take time. Alexandria is currently gathering community feedback and hunting down grants to fund these changes. You can expect the design phase to kick off in 2025, with construction breaking ground in late 2026. If all goes according to plan, the new and improved Ewald Park should be ready for you to enjoy by mid-2027.
