Next to the Potomac River in Alexandria, Belle Haven Park offers a peaceful escape from the urban bustle of Northern Virginia. As part of the George Washington Memorial Parkway and managed by the National Park Service, this 485-acre park combines natural beauty with recreational options throughout every season.

Right next door is Dyke Marsh, one of the DC area's last remaining freshwater tidal wetlands. This natural pairing makes Belle Haven attractive for wildlife enthusiasts. Bring your binoculars - you might spot bald eagles nesting in the area among dozens of other bird species that call this riverside sanctuary home.

Hit the Trails

Lacing up for a run or hopping on your bike? Belle Haven connects to the cherished Mount Vernon Trail, with paved paths suitable for everyone from casual walkers to serious cyclists. The smooth surface and river views provide a pleasant outdoor experience no matter your pace.

If you're in the mood for a more immersive nature walk, don't miss the Dyke Marsh Wildlife Trail. This flat, easy 1.5-mile out-and-back path winds through wetlands, offering prime spots for wildlife photography and quiet contemplation. The asphalt is generally well-maintained, with park staff typically marking and fixing any bumps or root damage.

Water Adventures

With direct access to the Potomac, Belle Haven offers various water activities. You can bring your own small boat and use the launch ramp (just be aware it can be tricky during low tide), or try your luck fishing along the shoreline.

Don't have your own watercraft? No problem. The Belle Haven Marina inside the park rents sailboats, kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards - well-suited for exploring this stretch of the Potomac at your own pace.

Picnics & Play

When you're ready to relax, grab one of the shaded picnic tables with river views and fire up the grills for an outdoor meal. The open grassy areas provide plenty of space for a game of frisbee, a family kickball match, or just lounging with a good book under the sky.

What to Know Before You Go

Belle Haven comes well-equipped with clean restrooms that have running water, drinking fountains (including one for your four-legged friends), and plenty of parking.

Speaking of pets, your dog is welcome to join you here, but remember to keep them leashed. During summer's heat, the grassy areas offer a cooler walking surface when the paved trails might be too hot for sensitive paws.

Natural Wonders

The park's position along the Potomac and beside Dyke Marsh creates a thriving ecosystem worth exploring. Birdwatchers will find themselves at home here, with migratory species visiting throughout the year and plenty of permanent residents to identify.

Don't rush home at day's end - the sunset views across the Potomac are worth seeing. On clear days, you can see National Harbor in the distance as the evening light reflects on the water.
